My role is a senior on the clients I work for. Therefore I will be leading the teams, coaching junior member of the team and managing the more senior members of the team. I will complete audit work in order to provide an audit opinion. Day-to-day work includes interacting with the client to obtain sufficient evidence for the work, completing work to a high standard, and interacting with the team.
Yes, I have developed many skills since working at EY. This includes time management, being able to manage my work load and the expectations of my managers. I have improved on my people skills, I'm now able to interact professionally with my colleagues and clients. I have also increased my knowledge of the banking sector and different audits, this has helped me solve issues and problems.
I enjoy my programme, however when I first joined, the programme wasn't structured which led to confusions in roles. As a school leaver, we are also compared to the graduates a lot. In addition, we are performing the same roles as a graduate - and I have been in the company longer - but I am still getting paid less. Each client is different, so I enjoy working with young people on each team, and it is interesting having to work with different managers and their different working styles.
The course is not well structured. At the start of my course I started in the Bristol office. On my first day, no one knew that I was arriving, therefore no one was ready to meet me and help me join the firm. Comparing myself to the grads where they had welcome drinks, it was very daunting and unpleasant. The training offered is extremely good, very insightful and frequent, you are also able to apply for as many courses as you want that interest you. The studying aspect is good, however I've had to book vacation for every exam so far so that I have time to study, as we are not allocated study leave days.
I receive a lot of support from my employer, we are allocated a counsellor and they assist you if you have any queries about your job, your progress etc, they are very helpful. In addition, a number of the partners are very friendly and will take time out of their day to discuss opportunities for growth. Therefore if I have a problem, I know that I will receive the appropriate level of guidance possible!
During college, the tutors are very helpful. They will stay behind after class and help you with any issues, and also be available via email. However, on a number of occasions, I have been contacted by my managers whilst being at college, asking me to help with work which hasn't been a pleasant experience.
I feel that in a lot of the exams completed they relate directly to the role that I'm in, so has assisted in the accounting treatment and assurance planning. However some exams I can understand why they are required, but I do not use them in my role - e.g. tax. However, I believe that if I did not have this qualification, I wouldn't perform as well in my role.
Yes, there are many networking events and clubs within EY. These include sports and social clubs. In addition to this, EY organise charity fundraising events which are very fun, these include treks and experience days. I have taken part in a Pentathlon through EY, it was very well organised and I'd highly recommend to anyone wanting to participate!
Yes
They will grow professionally and personally. As the company is full of young professionals, it is a good environment socially, and also provides you with a very good qualification. You will obtain appropriate on the job coaching and be given responsibility from day 1. Although sometimes you can be given high expectations, I'd recommend!
Be honest going into the interview process, the interviewee's are looking for someone genuine and eager. Be ready to work hard and have a lot of responsibility! As long as you appear eager and ready to work, you will succeed! Take every opportunity as it comes to you, as it'll help you grow!
