  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • We take calls from customers, approved suppliers, Third Parties and their solicitors, representatives, or insurers. Our job is to answer any questions callers have, whether these concern repairs to their vehicle and the hire they are being provided, or dealing with complaints, or resolving liability. Further to this, our job is to progress a claim as much as possible after each call, by, for example, reading and actioning post, or simply by changing certain settings in the system which may prevent the claim from being progressed.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my people-facing skills during my time at Direct Line Group. These skills include communication and better dealing with being put under pressure from people. Further to this, I have learned many new skills, including, for example, being able to operate the system which claims are dealt with on and any accompanying systems which are used to set up services such as garages or hire.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I find the experience of every call being somewhat unique interesting, as it means I have to adapt to every individual customer's attitude and their needs as well - changing the way I speak to different people, for example. As well as this I enjoy the feeling of having been able to help someone after resolving an issue for them.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would consider the program to be reasonably well-organised - for example, we will often be told about visits from the tutors a couple of weeks in advance, and these meetings are usually available to see on our WFM schedules. However, there have been occasions when we are not told about having a meeting or we are told that we will have one however the tutor does not arrive.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a significant amount of report from my employer. All apprentices have three and a half hours of study time each week, during which we can study from our FIT books or add to our portfolio. As well as this, probation reviews are set up so that employees who did not pass the initial probation have a second chance.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The visits from both tutors on a monthly basis are useful in that they highlight our strengths and weaknesses - I am able to work on improving what needs to be improved and this will mean that I am able to get better results from the apprenticeship. We go through the FIT textbook on a chapter-by-chapter basis which allows us, again to identify and work on weaknesses.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the qualification helps me to perform better as it grants a better knowledge of the insurance industry as a whole, not just claims, meaning that instead of always having to refer customers to the Sales and Services department when they have a questions about their policy, I may be able to answer this question myself.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are several different extra-curricular activities, such as the Board Game Night once a month on a Thursday, Summer and Winter parties for the whole office which are hosted in a nearby hotel, or team nights out, in which each member of the team is granted £25 from the company to pay for a meal, for example.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Direct Line to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that the company actually seems to care about individual employees and their concerns a lot better than the vast majority of other employers out their. As well as this, I find the job in and of itself very interesting and feel that the atmosphere of the company is very welcoming.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Direct Line?
  • I would say that one thing that surprised me about the interviewing process was how personal it was, and I would say that your personality would likely be a large factor on whether you are able to get a job. As for actually applying, be confident in your abilities and have an up-to-date CV.
