  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • At Santander, you rotate between different positions, I have done 2 placements within the Technology subsidiary which have both been excellent but very varied. There are hundreds of different places available within in the bank and Technology which provides a great apprenticeship experience for anyone with an interest in technology.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

The skills that are new to me include thriving in a corporate environment, change management, financial independence and coping with an open plan office environment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the variety that the job offers although sometimes the university work can be quite basic. The placements are challenging and offer opportunities that you wouldn't get at a traditional university. As there are many apprentices, there is also a good social atmosphere and everyone is very friendly.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised and has dedicated staff who look after the programme and the apprentices who are always on hand to answer questions or resolve queries you may have. There are times where communication could be better but on the whole well organised and structured in a way that will benefit all

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is a lot of support available, especially to those who reach out for help. There is always someone to ask for help whether that is your Line Manager, Apprentice Manager, Apprentice Buddy, the Emerging Talent team or even other apprentices on the scheme. Santander are very supportive in the apprenticeship programme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There is an equal amount of support available when working towards qualifications at Santander. There are teams that will provide help to those in need and everyone is happy to help with small issues that might crop up during coursework. One team I have been on offered training and certification for software that is outside of the uni scope.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The degree that I will receive at the end of the programme will help me perform in my role by allowing me to undertake roles that are previously not available for example software developer or cyber security analyst. The training provided will give me the tools I need to carry out these roles effectively

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a few extra curricular activities to get involved in although I wish there were more. My current team have a 5 a side football match every other week which has been very enjoyable to take part in. In addition, there are discovery days which allow staff to take part in activity that will help the local community.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Santander to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunity is second to none, when comparing my position to my friends, there are many differences between them that will push me above the competition. The 4 years of work experience are equally invaluable to employers as is the degree. There is nothing better than being paid to get a degree.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Santander?
  • Use the time you have before applying to research the course, the company and the kind of teams you might be working on throughout the 4 years. There is a lot of information out there that could benefit you in the application process. Also take time to consider that you will be working full time with time off when you choose rather than set university holidays.
