I am an Associate, I help managers and the team with auditing. I will do substantive testings on different financial statement line items and make sure all numbers and amounts are accurate. I also do testings for controls in place in the business to ensure they are sufficient and working effectively.
I have learnt to be more confident when speaking to colleagues and clients. I was a bit shy in the beginning when talking to clients but clients were all very friendly and colleagues were all very friendly and all very helpful. It helped me grow in confidence when speaking to clients.
I have enjoyed the programme very much. The programme gives us a lot of support, with ex-flying starts leading us, been in our shoes before, it really helped them to know what they can do to help us. The programme allows us to have an experience of the working environment we would be in the future.
It is very organised. It has our accommodation and travel organised, so you do not have to find somewhere to live in London, which can be quite hard. University lecturers do not expect you to work or study during the placement which helped release some stress about going back to University afterwards.
There are different teams in the work place that provides support. At the beginning of placement, they gave us a presentation which have all the names and contacts for when we need help. It allows us to know who to contact and who/where to find them when we need help.
During our placements, lecturers will give us supporting such as past exams papers to work on during our placement so we would not be piled with work when going back to University. However, they do not expect us to work on it as they understand that we would be very busy.
Without learning all the topic before coming on placements, I would be even more clueless when entering the work place. Learning all the key essentials things enabled me to understand what is going on for work. Although it was very hard to understand at the beginning, a little bit of explanation from the senior is enough as it helps relate to what we have learnt.
Unfortunately I was not able to involve a lot in extra curricular activities, as my placement was during the busy season of the firm. However I do know that PwC have a lot of different activities and volunteering activities that staff could join, there activities are all easily accessible and communicated well through the firm.
Yes
PwC enables you to learn a lot of things that you would not be able to learn from a textbook. Such as socializing, communication with client and professionalism. Although PwC is a big firm, there is also a lot of support from the firm to the staff. It's also a great place to start your career.
Be confident and know what you are doing. Know more than what is needed, Learn outside of the textbook. There are different schemes in PwC that enables you to work and get qualified as a Chartered Accountant at the same time. If you're qualified, then it's even better.
