  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My tasks have varied greatly, in the time I have spent in BDO. This is from completing tasks such as photocopying, filing, write ups to assisting with audits in the planning stage, the execution stage as well as on site. This has enabled me to experience an accurate reflection of tasks which an employee undergoes everyday and hence made my experience a true account into what the job involves.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my prioritisation skills, whilst being here. Having to commute from Coventry to Birmingham (2 buses to the train station(25 mins) , 30/35 minute train to newstreet and then a 5 minute walk from the station) has resulted in me being more effective with my time, and therfore also resulted in me procrastinating less. As a result, my time has been more greatly spentt and utilised, which is something I will continue to do after this experience also.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have greatly enjoyed my 2 weeks here in BDO. The experience has surpassed my expectations and i have been susceptiable to so many new things. The team have all been really good and inviting, which has made my experience all the more better. The work was unfamiliar at first but with the help from others, this is also not the case anymore as i have become more familiar with it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BDO?
  • I feel valued, as I had many oppurtunities where i was actively given tasks to complete within audits. I wasnt just given menial tasks to do but instead recognised and given necesarry work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program has been fairly well structured. In the first week, Pushpinder Virdee organised my weeks schedule and she was great. In the second week, my counselling manager sam wheeler did this and likewise she has also been great. In the first week my counselling manager was of ill so i didnt get the oppurtunity to meet her until the wednesday of the second week, where until the end of the week i have spent my time with her. Also, as it was eid on the 28th July, i was unable to attend the first day at baker street and hence i was not given an appraisel booklet to complete. Sam asked me about this on the wednesday and i told her that i had not been given any materials so she was really good in getting me this and printing it of for me but it would have been good to have had this sent down alongside my laptop, on the tuesday.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • There has been a great positive atmosphere, within the team. The general consensus of everyone has been great. Everyone has been more than happy to help me deal with queries and have actively told me on many occasions, not to hesitate to tell them if i was finding the work difficult or needed some help or wanted to ask a question. This enabled me to feel more confident about the issues mentioned and hence my experience was greater, as i didnt feel like i had to hold back.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Everyone has been great. I have had many questions regarding both the work and their careers and there entry routes into this role and all have been more than happy to comply and provide great insight. All individuals despite their role (school leaver, grad, senior, manager) have all been really encouraging and forthcoming and this is one of the things i have enjoyed most.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My travel costs will be reimbursed so this is great. Also, one night the company paid for me to reside in a hotel in luton as thats where the client was. This was also another great experience.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Whilst residing in luton, me and the team who were also residing in the hotel for the night, went out for dinner in the evening. This was really good and was great to know individuals outside of the work environment. Apart from this, I personally havent experienced any oppurutunities outside of work (apart from lunch with my counselling manager) but i hear there are many and as my experience was for 2 weeks, I think this is why i havent been able to.

  • 9. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Primarily, because the people and environment are really good. Everyone is really encouraging and inviting and it is a good environment to learn. You arent penalised for not understanding something but instead are given the oppurutnity to learn it. This is great when you are starting of, as you want to be in that kind of environment. Also, there are so many great oppurtunities such as secondments and the company is self is one of the best for what it does,

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • I would suggest they do their research before the interview and their presentations, as this will come across in the interview and have the potential to make you look really good or bad. I would also suggest they acquire basic understanding of simple terminology and processes such as familiarising themself with a balance sheet, as this will give them an advantage when they come to the work place, as they will know the basis and no thave to learn everything from scratch and hence they will be able to get the most out of their experience.
