I am a flying start in her first year of placement. My role is to perform my job to the best of my ability and make the most out of the coaching provided to me. I enjoyed my work placement. Although i am just in my first year, I have learnt a lot in the past three months. The work has been tough and lengthy yet this has helped me forge a stronger character. Areas I could improve on is to be more proactive and not be afraid to ask questions.
I have learnt how to use a wide number of Xcel tools and function throughout my work placement. They were inculcated to me by more experienced coworkers but some of them were self taught. For instance vlookups have come in quite handy when looking for a specific item in an endless list of GL codes. I have learnt how to operate a wide range of PwC software namely Aura, Connect and Halo. Such as in connect I have learnt how to manage request in a way the client knows exactly what we need and by what date. This has enabled me to efficiently perform my work. I have gained a good understanding of numerous accounting policies by being consistently presented to them and actively putting them into practice on a daily basis on the job.
I enjoyed meeting new people and learning how to operate in a real professional environment. It provided me with a sense of self accomplishment and pushed me to get out of my comfort zone. I however had a few technical issues with my laptop at the beginning of placement which greatly hindered my work progress. This was great source of stress and distress as my overdue workload kept piling up. Resourcing at PwC could be improved. Lengthy commutes to client HQs can be taxing in terms of personal health.
The course is well organised, in the sense that we have proper training at the beginning of the academic year, to learn and understand what we shall be doing. Secondly, the work experience helps me put the skills I learnt into practice. However I do wish we had a little more time before exams and after work placement to rest and study. Especially given that we have not much time during christmas holidays.
The people I have worked with were very supportive and understanding in times of need. My career coach has been of great moral support and help when encountering problems during placement. My work colleagues have readily and willingly helped me whenever I was in a difficult situation or needed coaching.
We have received a good amount of help throughout the course from our training provider. They readily make sure we are sent on the job with the right mindset and background knowledge to function in the PwC environment. They teach us the standard of professional behaviour expected of us on the job and the amount of effort we have to pool in.
The training provided gives us a good understanding and background knowledge of the role we shall undertake during placement. Training providers help us understand our work environment and the way way we should act within it. Training provides us a good base of theoretical knowledge of the job we perform. It helps us understand our testing and why there are different levels of risks and the approaches taken towards those risks.
Yes there are. Unfortunately it is hard to attend most of them as work becomes overwhelming. We have a series of extra curricular activities which help us bond with our work colleagues. From monthly drink rallies, breakfast and karaoke sessions. However it is hard to attend them, especially when you are sent of on away jos most of the time.
