  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • It involves using multiple hand skills. Using tools like spanners screwdrivers and other cleaning materials. it involves being set to work by a SAP and then working with a team as part of a working party to get the job done. it is always done to a high standard ensuring safety is the main front.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have learnt lots of new skills. this involves various hand skills, like filing, cutting and putting things together after taking them apart and cleaning them. I have also learnt how to drive a telehandler and a MEWP with an ipaf license. i have also done machine skills and learnt how to weld

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i enjoy the programme very much, this is because everybody is very friendly and very supportive of getting the jobs that are required for the apprenticeship. you feel apart of the team and get involved with lots of various tasks and jobs whilst creating a nice work team who i will be working with

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the programme is very well organised and structured. there is a plan that you can access which tells you what you will be doing in the first year second year and third year. This helps you to plan your jobs whilst on site and where you need to be at what date and when.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i receive a lot of support from the other members of my team, i can ask them questions about anything and they can help answer them to further my knowledge and understanding, if they do not know the answer then they know someone who will and i can go to them for further information

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a fair amount of support and the amount of support is equal to anybody on the scheme. if you require assistance with anything they can try and help to the best of their ability. if you need support with technical stuff you can get it and if you need support with any fitting skills you can get it

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i feel that the qualification helps a lot with what i will be doing on site whilst working as a craftsperson, with the various amount of skills learnt i can apply them all day everday throughout the work i will carry out on site with the other members of the team

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • i don't know, if there is any social activities or sports teams that national grid has for you to get involved in there has not been any mention of this to myself so i dont know. however there are some networking events that you can go to if you so wish to.

  • 9a. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • National Grid is a good company to work for, there are lots of employee benefits that you can receive, there is also lots of support and you feel good as part of the working team. everyone is friendly and guides you if you are doing something that may not be correct


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Make sure you are competent in using your hands and enjoy problem solving and other tasks similar. You need to also be competent in maths as doing the city and guilds tests and assignments requires maths and english. The job role is very hands on so make sure you want to do the job before appyling.
