Maintenance Apprentice Review

As an apprentice living on HMS collingwood, my day consists of travelling to HMS Sultan to work. From there I then proceed to complete whatever course or task we are currently doing, the work consists of powerpoint, revision and then practical work if applicable. This changes from day to day depending on how far through the course we are.

Upon starting this course I did not have a lot of experience or knowledge in my field and so I initially was worried about where I would be in relation to my class/ colleagues, however I have picked up a lot of basic understandings and skills by asking questions and diving into practical work.

I feel as if this has been a brilliant opportunity that I am so grateful for being chosen for. There is a lot of competition to get on the course and it is understandable why as the training facilities are some of the best out there and my individual needs are catered for when required.

Over the two years I feel as if everything has been planned out very well, we have never been too stuck for time and have been working at a constant rate since day one. This is good as it is replicating what the job will require when we are back on site.

I have a great support network here whether it is from my peers, instructors, manager or coordinator back on site. I know that if I am struggling with work or personal problems that I can contact anyone and they will do their best to help me and rectify any issues I have.

There is a great network of support both during my training in HMS Sultan and from previous apprentices back on site. There are abundances of revision material and learning mechanisms that are always available if needed, along with this we have knowledgable instructors that are happy to aid with in any way they can.

I personally feel that without the qualification that I am working towards I would not be in any position to do the role I have applied for, the qualification has helped with both my general knowledge and practical skills. Without this experience I would not have the confidence to go back on site and carry out my job.

Absolutely, there are so many activities that you can do after work or on the weekend. We have a great set up which involve a personal trainer who carries out sessions in the gym from Monday to Friday, and is also happy to create a development plan that you can follow throughout the whole week.

I feel as if this is a brilliant company that is not only already established but is striving to push the limits of what is achievable not only as a company but to the power industry as a whole; I am grateful for the opportunity to have a role in it.

Just be yourself, be honest about your experience and express your willingness to learn and improve yourself; not just in the role you are applying for but as a person too. I found that this role gave me the opportunity to have independence for the first time since sixth form and helped me to develop myself.
