Legal Apprentice Review

My role is Legal Apprentice within Jisc. I am studying a university degree alongside working in house for 6 years. After this I will be able to apply to be a solicitor through the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Within my role I pick out legal issues from contractual terms for internal people within my company and also shadow members of my team to gain as much experience as possible for me to learn and progress in my apprenticeship.

I have learnt a wide range of skills since starting 7 months ago. This being from both my university and from work. My written skills have improved by undertaking essays each week which has helped me to condense words down and keep to the point. This is essential when it comes to being a lawyer.

When I first started the programme I was anxious as to whether I would enjoy an apprenticeship as I have never done one. Jisc as a company have been very welcoming and made sure I fitted into the company well and met people. I love how close the apprentices are as a team and my team are so helpful and easy to communicate with. The work is exciting and always interesting as I am learning new things every day.

The induction was very structured. I had the chance to meet some people on my course and that was nice as it helps to know you know others in the same position as yourself. The training is always structured and very organised in what content I need to learn every week. My mentor from work as well as my tutor from uni have been very helpful if I have any queries.

The support I receive from Jisc has been great. My manager is always supportive in my uni work and shows interests in wanting me to succeed. I feel I can always go to her if I have any questions. My mentor has weekly catch ups with me to go through anything I feel unsure about.

The support I receive from my training provider has been very good. My tutor always feedbacks on my work and is very detailed in doing so, this really helps when it comes to improving as it is clearly stated what things I need to improve on. The general attitude from the university has been very positive and I am glad they are my training provider.

Within my law degree I will cover a range of different topics around the subject of law. So much content links to each other and this has helped me hugely to learn more within my job and there are things I know within work I wouldn't have learnt if I wasn't doing a degree alongside it.

At Jisc, there is a wide range of activities to get involved in. They are always trying to get collegues to get involved in extra things especially for apprentices. I have attended an apprentice event at the Houses of Commons through Jisc and it gave me the opportunity to meet other apprentices within different companies and it was really eye-opening. I hope to get involved in lots more for my team and other things.

I would definitely recommend Jisc to a friend. The company has such a warming astomesphere and it is a great working environment. They have a hot desking system so I am always meeting new people within the company and building relationships. It is really enjoyable to get up knowing I enjoy working for the company and enjoy going to work. They are very supportive of an apprenticeship and that is crucial.

If I was to advise others of applying for Jisc, I would recommend to just be yourself and be friendly. Jisc is a very welcoming and friendly company, they are all about diversity and inclusion. The interviews were really good in terms of teamwork, how you work well in a team and who you are as a person.
