My work experience involved meeting various people within the firm and gaining wide knowledge about law through their experiences. I mainly worked with two departments where I was allocated research tasks and got to sit in a department meeting. I also partook in a couple of group exercises with my team and got to visit court.
I got to develop my team work and communication skills as I was often working with other people for the tasks allocated to us. Many of the tasks also challenged me to think outside the box hence enabling to develop my problem solving skills. Doing research that was allocated as a task by my supervisor trained me for the future as law is a very research based career. This work experience thoroughly helped me learn about law and the different departments and allowed my commercial awareness to grow. Having trainees speak to me showed my what the best pathway is to become a lawyer.
I loved every second of my work experience because it showed me what the day to day life is of a lawyer and what their main duties consist of. It was an amazing experience because not only did I get to meet loads of new people, I got to learn something new everyday.
It was very well organised and we had the essential forms emailed to us beforehand so that we could start our first day without any complications. We were also given a starter pack and a timetable to see what we were doing each day and what the tasks for the morning were. However, some of the speakers we had often ran late.
I learnt loads about the company and its values. The people at Pinsents were very friendly and welcoming and did not hesitate to help which showed my it was a place of work where everyone felt comfortable. There was also a dress down day on Friday, which further promoted the relaxed and welcoming environment.
It really helped me to see that my strengths lie in studying law because I would enjoy and be good at it. I also got to see what department I would both like and dislike working in because I got to see what the work of each department includes. It showed me that going to university and doing an year abroad would be very useful.
I was not paid for this experience and no one had asked for my form to reimburse my travel expenses.
There were so many of opportunities to meet other lawyers who work for the firm and were happy to give their contact email to ask any questions and help us for future reference. The first day I joined each department. my trainee introduced me to every employee in the team.
Yes
It was the most valuable experience I have had as a student in any law firm. Pinsent Masons really gives you hands down experience of what its like to be a lawyer and you get to learn loads of new things that you probably wouldn't even have the opportunity to learn in university. It gives you a feel of what its like in a law firm and makes you more independent and responsible. You get the chance to meet new people and get useful contacts for the future.
Always have a positive attitude and be ready to learn because it is one of the best opportunities you will have.. Try your best and engage as much as possible to get the most out of it. Don't be shy, people love to help in anyway they can so ask lots of questions.
