  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Receiving your jobs, job information and associated parts on site in the morning for the days repairs. All repairs are based on our customers homes and you are issued with a van which you take home & all tools and parts required to complete the jobs. Once you have left site you are required to look after all of your customers for that day, keeping them updated on your progress & ETA. Once you have completed the jobs for the day, you return home with the van & then repeat the process the next day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I started the apprenticeship with minimal skills but the training in college, through the companies training department and also being buddied up with an engineer allowed me to very quickly gain & improve useful practical skills and theory knowledge which at first supported me in that role, but now forms a part of most things that I do on a daily basis.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The training programme was intensive and at times very difficult to learn all of the content but with the support from the business and managers, but also from the colleagues around me who were in the same position, this made the journey a lot easier and also made it a lot more enjoyable. From completing the apprenticeship I have been given the opportunity to work with very highly skilled & qualified people, meet a range of people and see places I have never experienced before, but also become friends with a large group of people who I became very close to over my 18 month apprenticeship

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. There are 3 main parts to the apprenticeship; college learning, in-house training on specialist subjects and installs & the on-road experience with different engineers who have taught me customer service and how exactly we can make our customers happiest. All 3 of these combine gave me enough experience and confidence to be able to succeed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There was always a massive amount of support, some colleagues struggled more than others & were massively supported by their site. If they needed time off to revise for upcoming exams or lighter days allowing them to study then this was taken into account. The managers are fantastic and understand that you are starting a new journey and sometimes need a little guidance to ensure you are doing things correctly. But more than the managers, I was surrounded by a team of 30-40 fantastic engineers who were all willing to spend time with me and pass on their knowledge from years of doing the job.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Any time I was in college, nothing was rushed and plenty of time was spent on the subject areas where people were falling behind. There was also normally time to recap and cover any areas required before taking exams to ensure everyone had the best chance possibly. Outside of this, my tutors were always accessible for advice or feedback on assignments to make the whole process easier and less rushed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The college based training taught me both practical skills and a massive amount of theory knowledge to support that. People often underestimate that the theory knowledge supports your learning and work as much as getting hands on doing the job. This teaching made me understand not just how things work, but why they work and why things react in certain ways. Overall this made me a more competent and skilled engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Every site has various different events that are planned throughout the year such as Christmas nights out, site briefings with prizes & handouts for the staff. We are also connected on workplace where all colleagues can see events, offers & experiences available within the wider network of the business. This means that no one feels left out as everyone can see the same opportunities.

  • 9b. Why?
  • Due to the amount of time, money & also confidence/belief that they have invested in me, I could not recommend Dixon’s Carphone enough. They are a massive believer in apprenticeships and are leading the way in what they offer. They work very closely with the college to ensure that the qualifications and training are suitable and useful to the tasks that the trainees will be doing in their job role
