HVDC interconnector apprentice Review

my role involves on a day to day basis, working with the Blyth site team to help and monitor work going on at the site, this includes from a health and safety perspective as well as some work involving the civil engineering aspect of the site, eventually after this apprenticeship I will be qualified as an HVDC engineer.

I have developed many skills, such as my communication skills, this includes through forms such as email and over the phone as well as in person, as well as developing my self confidence and public speaking abilities through the course of the apprenticeship, I have also gained some hand skills and understanding of how to use various tools on site, as well as an understanding of the equipment used on site and how it functions and can be maintained.

I thoroughly enjoy my programme, as it involves a mixture of theoretical and practical courses; which will help to prepare me for my role following the completion of my apprenticeship, My role also involves working in a team which I believe suits my skills and also the way I prefer to work.

The programme is quite well structured, with a timetable being released for the course of each working year, helping us to manage training courses and also time spent on site, reminders are sent before each course and there has been little to no rescheduling during the programme, meaning time can be fully devoted to other aspects of the job.

I receive lots of support from my employers, whether it is through reviews with my line manager, with other members of my team, or even with trainers after a training course, being open and talking about any problems at work is pushed at national grid, and there is plenty of support programmes and systems in place to give support.

I believe it helps me perform well in my role, it helps me understand the basics of my role, giving me skills and knowledge to build upon with other aspects of my apprenticeship, such as various other training courses, meetings, and interactions with other members of my site team and employees within national grid.

There are plenty of initiatives and extra curricular activities to get involved with at work, such as sports including football and a gym being available at the training centre, as well as schemes such as cycle to work scheme, there is also various engineering clubs and other activities that are available at work.
