I am an Airfield Technical Planning Assistant Apprentice, my role consists of assisting full Airfield Technical Planners in ensuring that the Airfield is designed to the correct standards and planning works in progress to ensure that they are performed safely around the airfield and don't have an adverse affect on the operation.
I've learnt a lot of skills through my day to day working, these range from Technical report writing to AutoCAD. I have learnt how to use specialist software to assist in the Airfield Planning processes, such as AutoCAD and Geospacial Data Management systems to ensure that we are Safeguarding developments around the Airfield effectively.
I enjoy my time spent at work and learning on the job. My college course gives a much wider view on the transport industry such as Trains, Cars, Ships and planes which I personally enjoy because I have an interest in the wider transport industry. I find I most enjoy my time at work.
I like the clear distinction between college and work time, I rarely have to spend time doing college work at work, which I believe allows me to get on with my role as if I wasn't an apprentice at work which I believe allows me to integrate with the team better and thus learn more.
My employer allows for me to spend time on my collage work during work time should it be required. In the past I have had check-up emails from our HR Apprenticeship Management team just to ensure that everything is going well and giving me a chance to flag any issues I may have, which I find nice.
I receive a good level of support from my training provider when I am at collage, although the course tutor can be difficult to contact to get advice when I am not away on a college block. The student accomodation which we are provided during my time at Leeds is also very nice and is in a great location
As previously mentioned I feel that the qualification which I am on gives me a great generalised overview of the industry and how it operates. I feel that this is useful on a high level because it gives me a vague understanding on how our operation may impact other operations such as the rail network and visa-versa
This isn't something which is really available at Manchester Airport. I often go to company events and training seminars which are really useful for my development as they are tailored to the operating environment which we work in and are very specific to my job role so give me the maximum learning.
Yes
Because they are a great employer with many development opportunities, I also believe that they do their best to look after their staff. The support is there from the company if things may not go to plan to ensure that a suitable solution can be found for both the Company and family.
Be yourself and you'll be able to fit in the best possible role. I feel that MAG Appreciates it's employees input into the business and wants it's employees to play an active part in suggesting ways for to improve the operation, I think this is nice because it gives us a chance to have our own input and footprint on the Airport
