I am currently a team leader therefore my role involves opening and closing the pub. Usually I run shift with a team of other staff members. Both working on the floor and bar and overseeing the kitchen. Customer interaction is a big part of the job whether just general talking or dealing with complaints or taking positive feedback. Also I reply to emails and help with stock. Team meetings is also an important part of my job role which occur every month.
I have developed a lot of confidence within my role as I have to delicate jobs to different staff members based on what I think their strength sand weaknesses are. Also as I have to talk to different people that has helped to develop my confidence. Furthermore my skills to become higher up in the job have been developed as I have learnt what skills an assistant manager needs and what they do in their job different to mine.
I enjoy this programme however I do find it very repetitive and it is stuff that I have already learnt previously due to working in the industry for four years and already completing a business degree and a-levels. However it is a good programme to jog my memory back on the important parts of business. I did struggle at first on how to use the different websites however once explained it is easy to navigate around each of the sites.
I think that the company that runs my programme is well structured however there is room for improvement. October is when I first signed up for the programme but I never actually received any work to do until January and then I was passed around three different trainers and I have never been visited by one in person therefore everything is done other the phone which I think could be improved. However this is due to my first trainer leaving.
I receive a lot of support from my manager. She is always there if I have any questions to ask or if I am struggling. She is the one that advised me to sign up to do the apprenticeship as she believed it would help me develop onto the next role in my career and move up the career ladder. Anything that I need I know I am able to ask and if she doesn’t know the answer then she will find out somehow.
I have the email address and contact number for my trainer if I ever need any help. The only problem is I am unsure which person I should email as I have had three different trainers. However they all usually reply within the same day if I have any questions which is very helpful and they try to explain anything that I have a problem with. The only time I struggled is with where I should upload my work to and where to find the e-learning.
I think that my qualification helps me preform better in my role as it helps me to understand the business side of the pub and not just the food and beverage side. You learn all about the different customers and how you can perform better. It is interesting to see the business side and you get a better understand on how the pub operates. It also helps to educate other staff members on that side of the job to help them perform better.
Currently there are no extra-curricular activities at my work due to not having much time to do so but this may be something to look into for the future. However we do have a Christmas party every year where all staff members get to together and celebrate how good of a year we have had and as a thank you for working hard. This is always a good night and a time for everyone to relax and enjoy the night together.
Yes
I would recommend Greene King to a friend as they offer good opportunities to progress within the career ladder if this is what you desire and they offer plenty of training. Everyone gets along with each other and it is a good atmosphere to work in. I left Greene King a few years ago to work for a different company but ended up coming back. They also offer good staff discount for when not at work and a friends and family discount scheme.
When applying for a job with Greene King I would show how confident you are and give it everything you have and show your personality. Even if you have never worked in the industry before, you can still apply. It can be great fun and you can meet some good people.
