As a maintenance technician apprentice, we are trained to be able to fix any problems that may occure during production so that everything can work as smoothly as it does. Our 4 years involve, one year in a specially created worksop to learn all our necessary skills then the next 3 years in the factory working in all the different areas.
I have learnt plenty of new skills for example electrical, mechanics, machieninng, PLCs and all the lessons we learn in the workshop that we will use in our later years. However i have developed other imortant skills and learnt more about social skills, comunication, confidence and even learnt skills related to leadership
I thoroughly enjoy the apprenticeship and it has help me in many way with confidence and social skills. Also every day is different with different opportunities and challanges that keep each day interesting and enjoyable, with doing so many different things and learning so many different skills in such a short time is highly enjoyable.
The tructure of the program is very well organised with a structured plan of how each year will go, knowing who is doing whatjob at what time. As well as the college work fitting around the workshop work all firts together so theres enough time to complete the tasks set before when it is needed.
We recieve a large amount of support from BMW group and they have helped us with issues that we may have reguarding our college side of work. They also help with any issues we may have and always offer that if any extra support is needed they will do there best to help, you can tell that they want you to reach your potential.
There is a lot of support from them but less so that from our employer. We now have got good tutors that do work with you to help you understans what they are trying to teach you, and help answer any questions you have even if there not related to the work directly.
The way that it is layed out does help me preform better as it is related to the working environment and the BTEC paperwork that we must do to get the qualification does help us understand more and helps focus on the skills that we need most, rather than doing skills unrelated to the area we are going to work in.
There are plenty if thing that you can get involed with. Most you will have to volunteer yourself with but there are great oportunities. For example theres a football team, theres the mountain challange we compete in and other events for charity. And the company will help you with these if you just ask.
Yes
Its a great oportunity where i have learnt more than just the skills that you learn when down in the workshop. The company also treat us well and provide us with lots of support and benifits that have allowed me to be able to move up here whils doing the apprentership.
Go for it. You do need to make sure you have the right attitude to want to succeed because they will help you to do that if you want to. But it is a great experience and everyone would be able to do it if you want to try and be the best you can be.
