  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my role as a first-year apprentice involves basic to high level competencey training in our workshop. we have three sections of competencey: electrical/electronic, mechanical, and machining. each rotation to learn and improve our new skills lasts four weeks. on a monday we have our B-tec study day which may involve working on assignments for maths, electrical principles etc. fridays are our reflection day where we write up detailed log books regarding the tasks and projects we have undertaken in the last week.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt an exceptional amount of new skills over my apprenticeship so far and I am extemely hapy with the progress i have made. coming straight from GCSE's I had never really been exposed to any kind of activity that i have undertaken here at BMW group. I began doubting myself however i soon developed and was made to feel as a talented indivdual whenever I experienced doubts. everything I do on a daily basis started out as a new skill for me, including high level maths, practical skills, and even just social skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i enjoy my programme to a high extent. despite the factor of possible stress I very much enjoy a challenge and as all that i have experienced so far at BMW group has been new to me, i definately find the programme challenging. overall it is a good mix rewarding hard work, and good fun.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • generally I would say the structure and organisation is pretty good. there have been a few hiccups here and there but not neccessarily a major issue that would severly affect anyone, and for the most part were out of the control of BMW. preparation before the new apprentices join may be required such as getting all of us a laptop.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • personally i have recieved quite a substantial amount of support due to personal issues. meetings took place to look over what can be done to support me and some options that were suggested sounded very pleasing and promising however it is still in processing in order to make some of them happen. I have resolved many issues thanks to my employer, i was also provided therapy that was all paid for and i found thids gretaly helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • once again I have recieved a healthy amount of support with regards to working towards my B-tec qualifications. i have taken up extra maths tuition after work hours in order to understand and complete distinction level maths. support is also provided in order to comfortably get you through the workshop qualifications and extra tuition can also be provided.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel it will provide me with the correct state of mind to complete relevant tasks in engineering and will provide me with the basics, at minimum, that are required to solve problems out on the plant. throughout the learning process it has also taught me new skills with regards to mindset and how to approach technical problmes in engineering.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are plenty of extra curricular activities to get involved in, such as the mini plant football team. BMW are always striving to make a positive impact in society and therfore we are always pushing ourselves to create new social events in aid of charity. some examples would be the three peaks challenge, mountain challenge, tough mudder, sky dives, football tournaments.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • not only is BMW group one of the leading pioneers in modern technology and innovation but they have helped me begin to grow on my journey into the 'real world' so to speak. i have massively broadened my skill set both physically and mentally, especially socially. it is a challenging yet supportive environment and it has always been my dream to be a part of, not to mention the sallary, frequent pay rises, and the incredible car scheme. it is an amazing opportunity to be part of BMW group at such a crucial time in the world when all is developing and changing so rapidly.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • first and foremost - always be yourself! BMW are interested i the kind of person you are just as muchg as your current skill set. do not worry if you have not much ecxperience in engineering; you will be seen as a blank canvas that can be perfectly taught every skill and soon enough you will develop into one of the best employees. never give up, if work is hard or you are struggling with anything such as personal issues, speak out and you will be provided with all the support you need (im speaking from experience). always remeber to work your hardest... the hardwork is not over once you get the apprenticeship however the first year is probably the most work but it goes unbelibably quick. the fun really begins in the second year through righ until the very end of your time here at BMW :)
