I got involved with various presentations which allowed me to find out more about the field of law in general as well as the world of work within the firm. I also had the fantastic opportunity to sit with trainees from two departments and complete tasks which were both preset and to do with live matters.
I developed the skill of accuracy due to the exercises and the trainees which/who encouraged me to be secure in my findings and answers for the tasks set as I learnt about the gravity which correctness holds in such a field of work. I also developed interpersonal skills through the opportunity of speaking with various legal professionals.j
I enjoyed my work experience very much as I was able to gain a better understanding of the world of work in the legal field. It also helped that everyone who I met was both friendly and ready to help me whenever I got lost or needed help on a task
Due to the introduction of a timetable prior to the course and a good welcome pack, I found that my work experience was very well organised which was something that I did not expect since I was aware that everyone around me was very busy with quite pressing matters and deadlines
I learnt a lot about the company culture since I was able to speak with many legal professionals about their experiences and was able to sit in with departments to almost simulate how it would be like to work in each seat. We were also allowed to have lunch within the firm and had access to much of the firm's systems.
The work experience allowed me to be secure in my decision of areas of law which I may be interested in in the future as a result of the tasks and information about various clients of the firm. Although the experience was greatly positive, I can safely say that I am secure in my decision to stay away from corporate law and to lean towards the more public law side (following the tasks set and conversations with trainees).
The work experience was voluntary, however it was such a good opportunity that monetary awards were not needed to gain a sense of fulfilment. The firm paid for our lunch each day and gave us the option of reimbursing us for our travel which was very helpful for those who lived far away.
There were opportunities for doing both during the morning workshops and presentations as well as during our seats however we all found that, although everyone was friendly and approachable, it could sometimes be intimidating at lunch times when attempting to network or meet with any other employees outside of those who we sat with.
Yes
It is a valuable experience to have as the firm itself is very keen to help and ensure that the week runs as smoothly as possible. I also learnt a lot and did a lot of work during my time at Pinsent Masons which allowed me to develop skills which I can use in the future.
I would tell them to be very concise in their application- no flowery language! I would also say that prior to applying to do work experience at a firm like this, you should know what you want to get out of it as well as what you believe you can bring to it. Set out aims and objectives
