It was 4 day work experience programme where we got to experience working in a senior international law firm. We were allocated into practice groups in different departments and it involved: receiving presentations, getting to work together on business group exercises and asking professional lawyers questions about their work sector.
I learnt about office etiquette and what it is like working in a high-end law firm environment. Also, through meeting professionals across a range of divisions and being able to both ask them questions and engage in support workshops, I was able to learn more about different types of law.
It was a very brilliant and illuminating experience. In other work experience placements I've underwent, there was always a very intimidating hierarchical feel where I felt very trivial. Here, everyone is incredibly approachable and will help you with anything you need. The work load was also doable and enjoyable.
Much more organised than I would've expected. Typically, such illustrious law firms wouldn't go through half the effort that was went through here in organising activities and support workshops for the work experience students. With the timetables and qualified supervisors, everything was clear, organised and easy to follow.
Every professional, across all departments, delivered the same message about the company culture and what it would be like to work here - making it easy to learn and understand. The firm, however, is huge, and runs a multitude of divisions so I didn't learn everything there is to learn.
I've never considered a 9-5 office job at a solicitors to be something suitable for myself as I've always preffered the idea of flexible hours and self employment (barrister law). However, this experience has led me to believe that i could find job comfort and happiness as a solicitor.
No, I wasn't paid or reimbursed for this experience. I am in Year 12 and was allocated this placement by the LSE Pathways To Law Programme who are in collaboration with the London Prime Work Experience Programme. I wouldn't have minded payment. However, I came for the experience.
There were multiple. We were given a departmental structure talk, got to sit down and talk with our supervisors, were given a presentation by two lawyers in different stages and later another on commercial litigation and collaborated in a business group exercise. We were constantly encouraged to ask questions throughout.
Yes
It was the most comfortable and least inconsequential I've ever felt in a law firm environment. Every professional, regardless of stage or division of work, understood our positions and let us feel involved. The firm knew their brand vividly and definitely embraced others in being part of that brand.
Make sure you come armed with many questions to ask as you will constantly be encouraged to ask away. Be motivated to learn and embrace the firm's culture and don't be afraid to ask questions and engage with anyone here as they are approachable. And bring a notepad.
