Technology Apprentice Review

Over all my day consists of answering any email queries. Working with the mainframe systems within RBS and developing programs within this. This involves using languages such as COBOL, JCL, SCL, SQL, DB2 and CICS. My day to day also involves learning about the ways of working within RBS. Using methods such as AGILE.

Developed numerous communications skills such as presentations skills, delivering meetings, conducting phone calls. Also developed a lot of technical skills for my role in core banking such as learning to code, understanding the ways of working at RBS and also learning how to work in and as part of a team

I enjoy my program a lot. It has been very fulfilling to be able to learn and get some hands on work experience. The teams I have been working have been very supportive and allowed plenty of time to get to grips in my working environment. On top of that there is a supportive group of apprentices also working along side me.

Overall the programme has been structured OK. There is generally a lack of communication from the apprentice management team and this has lead to some confusion and frustration at times. Luckily I am in a good team that has already had apprentices so they know how to structure the workload etc.

We receive plenty of support from RBS. There is dedicated time decided between myself and my manager to complete any and all coursework. There is also a good network around me that I can go to for any help I need. However, I believe that this is not always the case across the company as a whole and some people are left to themselves.

Support from BPP has been very up and down. In the beginning there was a lack of communication as to when we would sign up. There have also been a number of cancelled meetings etc which is rather frustrating. But generally most issues are dealt with or handled eventually and the trainer has been spot on.

The qualification is ok. It is very generalised which is to make it applicable to a wider audience but in terms of my area of work there is not a huge amount of information that is useful. It is good to provide a basic knowledge of technology as a whole but in terms of my role I have not found it very useful yet.

Yes. There is a huge network of things to get involved with at RBS. There are a number of societies in the employee led networks that promote inclusivity and there are plenty of groups to interact with on workplace. In terms of social aspects it is mostly organised internally but there are some people that play football or go rock climbing weekly.

It has been a great place to work so far and has provided tonnes of opportunity. The pay is very generous for an apprenticeship and the benefits are very good. There is the option to work from home and there is plenty of flexibility in terms of working hours etc.

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and expose yourself to new experiences. Developing your network is also crucial as it will help you in future. Also embrace the environment, it is very relaxed and you have to be pretty disciplined and self motivated but it allows you a lot of freedom to do what motivates you
