  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a tax analyst and this involves working with client tax affairs on a day to day basis. In the lead up to January this is mainly concerned with compliance as all tax returns must be submitted before 31 January. Between February and September the role involves more tax advisory work. This is where I deal with clients personal tax affairs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have further developed my team working and communication skills. The work that I do is very team focused, there is little that I do that is individualised and this has allowed me to further develop my team work skills. I have also developed a more formal style of writing which is not something that I have experienced before.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying the challenging nature of my programme. However I am finding the number of exams challenging as it is very demanding to work a full day and then arrive home and study all evening. I enjoy the changing nature of the work and the technicalities of the job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised in terms of the exam timetable, this was given to me at the start of my programme and is a plan of 18 months. This gives me clear visibility in terms of where I am heading in my programme. The work however has not been as organised as my start date clashed with other analysts being out studying.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a great deal of support from my employer. I feel very supported in terms of my exams and the work that is required in order to complete the exams to the best standard I can. I am supported with study leave leading up to the exam and I am able to book holidays if I require further time off to study.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received support from my training provider in the lead up to exams through their online portal. This is equipped with the study material needed in order to sit the exam. There is the possibility of contacting tutors through the online portal however I have found the standard of their support to be lacking as they are not always keen to help in the most proactive way.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification definitely helps me to perform better at work as the qualification gives me a greater technical knowledge of various subjects that I see in my day to day role. I have developed a greater technical knowledge of various tax technical subjects through modules in my qualification such as principles of tax and accounting.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Deloitte because of the name of the company and how well respected they are, along with the support that is provided in terms of studying towards the qualification. I would however note that the policy surrounding only one resit maximum is harsh compared to the other big 4.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • I would encourage other applicants to be confident during the application process and to be themselves. Deloitte employ people not just for their academic qualities but also their interpersonal qualities too, which are just as important. I would encourage people to research into the role and ensure that the role they are applying for suits their personality.
