  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am responsible for researching and providing analysis on various tax issues facing clients. This could be whether they are paying too much, or paying too little. In particular, I focus on the area of VAT. We analyse case-law and HMRC guidance to provide advice to clients with various queries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills since starting. I have learnt key communication skills. I have learnt key presenting skills. I have learnt time management. I have learnt how to prioritise certain work streams depending on the importance of each piece of work. I have also learnt how to manage.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been completely poor. It is very unclear what I am supposed to be doing as part of the programme. The programme was compulsory and not something I opted to do. We were initially told it would not require any additional work and now it appears that it will delay my exams.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation and structure of my programme is horrendous. Nobody knows what they are doing and what work they have to complete. We get random emails from members of the Apprenticeship program telling us we are supposed to have completed various tasks which we have no idea about or how to do.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer does not know what is going on either. We are supposed to have 'coaches' although no-one knows who these are or what they are supposed to do to support us. There is a real disconnect between the employer and the apprenticeship provider. Pretty sure no-one at my employer knows what we are doing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have regular courses and "tutors" although contacting the tutors can sometimes be difficult. The tutors who host our courses are very good though. The sessions are well run and the online courses are very thorough. We sometimes have badly-timed mocks and there are some very silly practice questions online.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Not much. There is very little crossover between what I am being asked to do in my job role and what I am doing as part of this Apprenticeship. I am developing skills on the job that I would be without the Apprenticeship even existing. It doesn't feel useful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some extra-curricular activities and I have typically got involved in the sporting ones. I have joined the 5-a-side football team, the hockey team and also the triathlon network. I have also joined the Green Champion society in order to further the environmental considerations for the business from an employee perspective.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think that the employer provides a lot of benefits to its employees and offers a great working experience. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in social engagements. It also looks very good on the CV ot have such a prestigious employer and the skills you gain are transferable.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • Put everything into the application. When starting at Deloitte it will be important to build your network and to get involved in everything that you can. There will be plenty of opportunities and you have to make the most of it. You can try to further your own career here.
