  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis we were given the task to fix both customer, stock and cws phones. Not only this but we were given a target of sixteen per day. On a good day I found I could hit around eighteen - nineteen however on a bad day, target was enough.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The main skills I learnt during my apprenticeship was time keeping, (vital in order to hit target comfortably) patients, (sat next to the same engineers for eleven and a half hours gets tedious) and most of all teamwork, (helping each other out when in need is vital in order to be as efficient as possible).

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed the practical side of my Level two Apprenticeship as I found it easy to adjust from laptops to phones and learn the new skills that was needed. However I didn't really enjoy the classroom side of my course as I found it to be relatively unorganised throughout.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The practical side was great! We were given specific rooms for training and leaning the new skills in order to complete each model as efficiently as possible. On the other hand in the classroom I found that nobody really knew what we were learning and the reason behind it until two weeks before our final exam. This only gave us a few weeks to cram in a whole years worth of education.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Personally I found my employer to be relatively supportive as I was given all the correct tools to complete every-day work tasks. Not only this but I was also given time to do college work at work rather than fixing phones (barring mind this was only when the work flow was low).

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I thought that Lincoln college was very helpful during the process. We were offered extra lessons when needed and one to one chats with our tutor at any point if we felt it was necessary. We were also given a good amount of hours in the day to get college work done and assignments fully completed to the best of our ability.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training provided was vital in order to complete my day-to-day role as a mobile engineer. When training we went through each phone we were fixing and had a step by step guide on the training manuals and how to disassemble /reassemble each unit. This helps each engineer understand the models properly which speeds up the process in the long run.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am not aware of many extra-curricular clubs or activities within the business. The only one I am certain about is the football team. On the other hand individual teams may organise events such as; paint balling, bowling, drinking and go-carting. These events help the team bond and work together better.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Dixons Carphone to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that the current job I am working is a great stepping stone for further employment. I am currently nineteen years old and on a decent wage whilst leaning new things and gaining qualifications along the way. I feel that the experiences I have gained with Dixons Carphone will help me further myself in my career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dixons Carphone?
  • I would advise to think long and hard about whether they think they could handle the long shifts. Not only this but the lack of sunlight can sometimes be draining. I would also advise to make sure it is a job role they could see themselves doing for the foreseeable future.
