my role currently includes shadowing more experienced engineers at the airport on their maintenance jobs and any pre planned maintenance or servicing so we can learn as much as possible from them when we are not at college in order to prepare us for when we come to work full time
Before starting this apprenticeship I had never done engineering before, I have now developed many skills at college and in the workplace such as electrical wiring and mechanical maintenance skills that I will be able to use at work when we go to the airport full time in the future
I enjoy this apprenticeship program a lot as it has allowed me to develop new skills in engineering at college but also have the opportunity to see where i will be able to use those skills when I eventually go in to work full time and finish college in a few years
Our apprenticeship program is well structured as all of us apprentices have a clear understanding of what we will be doing for the next four years, how long we are in college for, what days we are supposed to be in college and what days we are going into work
We receive a lot of support from our employer as they are always making sure we are doing well in our college work when we are not at work by asking for monthly reports and also have set up monthly apprenticeship meetings for all the apprentices to meet up and talk about our ideas
Our training provider Trafford college offers us a lot of support towards our qualifications by always giving us feedback on jobs and any written work in our portfolio, they also send reports every month to our employer to make sure that they know how we are getting on at college
The qualification we are doing has already taught us vital skills such as the ability to do mechanical maintenance and electrical wiring and also electrical maintenance that will eventually be very important to help us perform better in our role when we go to work full time and finish college
The airport has already sent all of us apprentices to a networking event about building a northern powerhouse where we met many other apprentices from a wide variety of different company’s and also listened to many guest speakers which was very interesting. They have plans to send us to more of these in the future
Yes
I would recommend MAG to others as they have a wide variety of apprenticeships available in all sorts of roles, the apprenticeship managers are always supporting us through our apprenticeship by putting on monthly apprenticeship meetings and checking how we are doing with our college work to make sure we are ready for when we go to work full time
I would advise any others applying to MAG to research about what roles are available, ensure that you achieve the best grades you are capable of and complete a CV showing your career history to date. Submit a covering letter highlighting you suitability for the role and your passion for a career at MAG
