  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is based on leading my team on a daily basis, to provide my team with knowledge that I have accrued throughout my experience working in retail and learned throughout my apprenticeship. I don’t only stock shelves, but also get involved in community. I do this to encourage links and to promote my business locally, I often get involved in charity work and ensure my team are given the opportunity to get involved also.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a lot about legislation which I didn’t know and have been able to put this into practice within the work place. I’ve been able to provide extra training within my team to ensure that these legislations are met, I’ve recently placed some members of my team on training courses provided by my company which I was unaware of.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I absolutely love the theory part of my programme, I love getting stuck in, researching and writing about different subjects. It encourages my knowledge and provides me with a sense of pride when I finish and submit my work. The conferences I attend are fun and I learn a lot while I’m there, although the days are often long due to travel.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At the beginning the programme seemed pretty organised, we were split into two parts and had a tutor per group. But as the programme has gone on we have gone through 3 tutors and the courses we attend are often based around the assessments we have already submitted. This can often lead to poor planning throughout our written assessments.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is extremely supportive, I have a group specifically designed for us apprentices and have links with passed apprentices. My manager plans our apprentice hours per week and asks for our work to be emailed to her also so she can see how we are doing. If we have any queries we can contact a number of people.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • To be honest I don’t feel like I have had much to do with the training provider and have only had one meeting with a tutor in the last 6 months. It’s been quite hard to get in touch with anyone from the programme when I have needed help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It expands my knowledge, which I am able to put into practice at my work place and make myself a better person. I have recently gained an exceeding status in my recent review and have been able to test myself by stepping into higher tier when my manager was on holiday and my deputy manager had left.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Usually just community based work. We often visit a number of places and get involved in raising money and taking part in fares. We recently did a fair trade day with a centre and provided a colouring competition, free bananas, coffee and chocolate. The centre loved it and we now attend all of the centres fun days.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The coop is different to other competitors and I love the community side of it. The job is fast paced but I like that. I like that the coop encourage you to be yourself and allow you to express yourself within the work place. I’ve made some great friends.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • To be yourself always and to be confident in who you are. If advise that they attend any community projects and charity days as they are absolutely amazingly heart warming. I’d encourage them to research the coop, especially how we started out as it’s actually a really good read.
