monitor and maintain plant equipment such as instruments and control panels such as delta v systems, i calibrate and re condition instruments to meet the correct standard and also wire motors, lighting and atex systems. once a week i attend kirklees college where i am working towards my advanced science industry maintenance technician apprenticeship.
i have learnt many new skills such as being able to work with a wide range of people and not just people of my age range as being at work you needed to work with any types of people. I have also developed my mentoring skills with some of the younger apprentices by helping them through their first few months and getting them used to their assignment set up and time keeping.
i enjoy my program as i have such a varied role within my workplace and a good team around me. The atmosphere in the workshop makes work enjoyable and makes learning easy when on jobs. My expectations when i first started were that it was going to be very difficult and no one would help but the team around me and the higher management are always willing to help and advice where ever possible.
my program is very well organised and training is always relevant. we have a day at college every Tuesday where all the lessons are really well planned. once a month all the apprentices on site have a network meeting over lunch to discuss various topics on what they have experienced and what could be done to improve the experience.
i receive as much support as i need from my employer. Depending on what i need help with i can ask most colleagues and get a good educated answer. I have a mentor that has been assigned to me that helps me with work related problems. we also have a training team that facilitates training courses and college.
when working towards my qualifications my training provider is always on hand to support my learning if their is anything i need help. i have contact information for my college tutors so that i can contact them out of hours if i am struggling. all tutors are willing to help wherever possible.
my qualification marries up well with what i am doing at work as it is all relevant i can have a day at college and the next day go into work and put that theory into practice. after my first year i now feel like i know a lot more abut the wider industry and my work due to completing my first year.
we have a sports and social club that always discounted tickets to sporting events and days out, we play football with some people from work during the week. we have the opportunity to attend college open days and young persons network where we take part in charity events and social nights.
Yes
as it is a great opportunity to develop skills while earning money and with a great team. its a good way to get your name known in the industry and meet people you wouldn't ordinarily meet. i have already recommended the apprenticeship and internship to a number of my friends
do research on what the company manufactures and the ethics of the company. Be themselves and to talk to people and be confident. attend the annual open day to see how the site operates and what people that they would be meeting. speaking to other apprentices that are on the program to see what they need to know and what type of work the program entails
