  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role at Solenis in Bradford is named "EC&I" standing for Electrical, Control and Instrumentation. My role overviews the maintenance of the plants including the calibration and testing of the instruments monitoring our plants and keeping them safe. It also includes fault finding and creativity allowing me to create some ideas and equipment myself that can be implemented on to the plants for their reliability and safe function. The great thing about my job role is having the opportunity to learn something new everyday.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed various skills that range from a technical bias to a social bias when taking part in events involving other workers and external parties working with me. I believe I have developed my social and cooperative skills to a good level with the help of my colleagues and managers pushing me with their support. I also have developed my technical skills with the help of my mentor in the workshop who has encouraged and motivated me to achieve the best of my abilities. The support and motivation from everyone has been great.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is a very interesting and complex course of 3 to 4 years as we are learning new knowledge everyday of our working lives. This is a great thing due to it allowing me to have the chance to understand so many different things that my trade involves and allowing me to be able to use these skills on a regular basis. My colleagues around me also encourage me to enjoy this programme a lot more due to them being great people and helping me with anything I am struggling with and also being great people to work with.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is a very well balanced scheme that is managed very well and correct. my programme includes a scheme in which we go into the design office for a few months and get to learn about various things in depth. This includes reading engineering drawings which we can use as a skill in the workshop to allow us to trace the drawing to find something such as a problem in the circuit. we are also given a good amount of time at work to allow us to document our information that we have learnt so we can use it for later. Overall the scheme has been structured very well to the standards I need to learn and understand.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my managers and apprentices mentors is on a regular basis. This support ranges from anything from a chat to needing help on a job my mentor/managers will be on the case immediately helping me out to the best of their ability. If there is an external issue such as me struggling at college the support I received was phenomenal with my employer always standing by my side and giving me the best support to solve any problems I face.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive regular support from my managers and mentors with my assignments for my qualifications. This can be from anything as small as checking it for me to giving me advice on it and helping me out. If I have a problem with them my managers will always contact college and let them know of this so my managers can keep me on the correct path to achieving my qualifications. Overall the support is amazing.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me build up my skills for my current job role in various ways. My level 2 PEO saw me doing the very basics of engineering such as filing and drilling to wiring up a domestic electrical circuit. this helped me to begin to understand the basics of my job role. In my current level 3 BTEC I am able to use things such as my electrical installation unit to be able to read the IET regs and help me understand how to work things out that adhere to my job role. My skills at college also help open a wider world of engineering allowing me to understand more than what I may find at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The opportunities that I get to represent my role and company include events such as apprentice open days where I get to speak to families who attend about my job role. On an occasion a football game is organized with my colleagues as an external event which is great to have.
