I am part of the Splunk team and my day will consist of building Splunk apps on the back-end using Unix then deploying these to become functional apps to use and explore on the web. I build dashboards for users to explore their data. Completing Splunk queries and assisting customers is also a daily task.
I have learnt a lot through the apprenticeship and since starting my role with Technology. I am grateful of the opportunity RBS has given me and the training provided by QA then BPP. I now know more about IT in general but can use multiple OS and applications that I had never heard of before joining.
I have overall enjoyed my time from start to near finish of the apprenticeship. There has been a lot of set backs. RBS have not been transparent throughout the process as they changed our provider from QA to BPP making us the Ginny pigs half way through our time severed. This made it difficult for myself and others to progress and complete the learning. BPP have tried their best but were not equipped to offer the same support and learning capabilities like QA gave us.
To follow on from the above comments I got off to a great start with QA and the learning they provided was excellent. Then when RBS dropped QA and made us change provider half way through our year it all kind of fell apart. I don't believe it was intended to cause such an impact to our progression but it was really badly planned and the company put cost saving in front of all our development and experience.
My manager has been supportive and allowed me the time to go out of office for training and complete apprenticeship work in working hours. RBS as a whole has offered support and set up meetings etc for students. I think RBS has tried to help more after the training provider error.
With QA I received unlimited support and felt really comfortable with how I was progressing. BPP has been the opposite. No support as our point of contact is not IT based and cant answer any questions (which isn't their fault). We are advised to just ask other students who have completed that task.
The qualification will benefit me all round as you gain different IT skills/knowledge. Nothing has related directly to my role but I can take bits from what I have learnt and apply it. As I work on a specific application it would be hard for BPP to give me specific training but I can take unix tips and apply them.
There is some but I haven't personally taken up on any offers or sought out to join a group. There are groups that play football at lunch and after work most days who are always looking for players. I know there are some lunch n learn groups to join.
