  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a funeral arranger. My role is to provide families when they come in to see me support and guidance to book and arrange a funeral. In our branch we have appointments for clients but also some people do walk in. If we are able to see them there and then, then we will. Some people also come in to book and enquire about pre paid funeral plans. I will help people and answer questions they may have. On a day to day basis it’s mainly an admin role. We check emails, answer the telephones, arrange funerals, book ministers, crematoriums. We also do banking and invoicing for funerals

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I haven’t learnt so much in regards to the funeral industry. I have learnt how we care for our deceased when in our care, how to arrange funerals, all about paperwork required. I have learnt to be empathetic towards the clients and to treat them with respect and try to understand how they may be feeling. I have developed my admin skills by using the systems co op use.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it to the point where I actually love my job and learning all about the funeral industry. There is so much information to take in and you really do learn something new every day. It’s very different to any job I have done before and it’s definitely the right career path for me.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It’s is ok structured. There seems to be so many changes from when I first started. This can sometimes be confusing and repetitive some things I feel are completely pointless and a waste of time. However I feel it is prolonged without the option to complete sooner if required.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel supported if I need help. I can call my manager at anytime and if they can help at that time then they will. I can ask questions and will get an answer and pointed in the right direction. I don’t feel that we receive much support in regards to the community work we are expected to do, just told to get on with it. Also some ideas we would like to do and not well received.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My coach is very supportive, again I can call or email at anytime with questions and will get the help I need. When I first started I was told I would get help with my English and mathematics qualification that I need to complete. I haven’t received any thing yet nearly a year later.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • At first I felt it did help. Now I find it repetitive and boring. The questions in most units are so similar and sometimes boring. I have learnt more doing the job role itself than through doing the qualification. I don’t think it’s helpful at all really. I find it more of a chore to do than learning anything new.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I think other areas do things like this but nothing I have seen in my area. We are asked to get involved with our local community events which we do and go visit local care homes, schools etc but unfortunately we very rarely get the time to do this due to busy work schedules.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I love working for the co op and their ethos. I like the fact they tell us to be ourselves. They are a great company to work for. I feel supported and safe working for the co op. I rate them as a company and they also value you and recognise when you do a community event.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • I would just tell people to be themselves literally. If you are suitable for the job role it will come naturally to you. Take your time learn the job, get involved & learn what the co op is all about. They are for the people and it does show. Also be prepared for a stupid long recruitment process that seems to take months. But worth it in the end.
