My role is a maintenance technician. This involves going up the wind turbines and servicing them. A service on a wind turbine will normally take three to four days on average to complete. In the morning you will have a toolbox talk and gather all of the tools/ equipment that you require before heading out to the turbine.
I have learnt many new skills as well as developed previous skills that I already had. One skill that I have approved upon a lot would be my team working. This is because you are always working in teams of either two or three so you need to learn how to work well with others.
I thoroughly enjoy my programme. I think I got really lucky getting this apprenticeship as it is the best one that I have heard about and on top of that I enjoy the work. The majority of my friends all have apprenticeships and when they talk about theirs is very evident that Siemens provide a very good apprenticeship programme compared to other companies.
I feel like my programme is very well structured and organised. I had to move down to Newcastle to study for the first year and a bit of my apprenticeship. My apartment etc was all set up and paid for before I went down and we were informed about everything we would need to know about before moving in.
I receive all of the support that I could need from my employer. My line manager comes to my site on a regular basis to have a catch up in order to see how I am progressing in terms of my portfolio work and general on the job training. As well as this I can always get support off all the technicians on site.
My training provider is also good at supporting me. My training provider is based in hull and I am in Scotland however my assessor regularly makes the trip up to come and see me on site to check that I am progressing correctly. As well as this I can always phone or email him if I have any problems with anything.
I feel like my qualification really helps me perform well in my role. This is because the qualification has a lot to do with safety as well as technical knowledge. This means that I have a really good understanding about how to stay safe onsite. Similarly I have a good technical knowledge as a result of my qualification.
There are extra curricular activities that I can get involved with. Just last year Siemens helped out with the tough mudder race for life in hull. I attended this and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Not only do you get to help out with a good cause but Siemens also pay your hotel bill for the weekend and dinner costs.
Yes
I think their apprenticeship programmes are very good and provide you with everything you need to start off your career in engineering.
Work hard and it will pay off in the end.
