My role is a wind turbine technician. Here we monitor, service and maintain 152 wind turbines at clyde wind farm. My day to day job starts with a tool box talk in the morning before heading out to the stores to gather any tooling required before going to the turbine.
I have learned many new skills whilst being in this role. Some of these new skills are learning how to use hands on tools such a torque wrenches, spanners etc. Other skills that I have developed is a better mechanical understanding of things operate in order to gain an idea of what is happening with the turbine.
I thoroughly enjoy my programme. On a day to day basis I get to work in an industry that is new but booming. it a vastly growing industry that provides great views and a great environment to work in. There is a great community within all at work and I feel very luck to be in the position im in.
The apprenticeship scheme is very well organized and structured. There is a great support network from line management, site management and supervisors and even through technicians as well. The organization is very supportive and accommodating in ensuring that you progress, get rewarded and are not lacking in anything such as confidence, discrimination etc.
we receive a lot of support from our employer. Frequently there are check ups either via email or face to face meeting. Here a form is filled out detailing your progress and you discuss any issues or achievements that have entailed and a better understanding of the apprentice is gained.
we receive excellent support and feedback from the training provider when working on our qualifications. The trainer provides detailed feedback on points to improve and where we have done well on our knowledge questions/ coursework and is always fair in his marking and notes when pointing us in the right direction.
I feel like the training and qualification we receive helps us a lot in terms of performing better In the workplace. It gives you a better insight into how processes and site operates/ works and also helps you gain an understanding into certain machinery or equipment that is found/ used within the turbine.
there are a number of different extra-curricular activities available for us to get involved in. Some of these are extra training in order to further progress within the company. Nights out such as Christmas party, team building exercises. As well as this there are external company wide events that help us gain a bigger picture of the company as a whole.
