  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day to day role within a team working on a project, my daily role consists of a lot of software engineering. I also have apprenticeship work on to of that such as studying and tasks. I spend my time studying, replying to emails, development work, debugging, testing and in stakeholder meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have Learnt c#, SQL, more people skills and different technology skills from the apprenticeship scheme. I am currently only officially 5 months into my apprenticeship so there is a lot more to learn throughout the next year and a half. Core skills are included in the apprenticeship learning also/

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy the day to day role of my job and my apprenticeship however it did seem a bit daunting at first as it is not structured how you would expect an apprenticeship to be. This however doesn't cause any issues with my learning or the workload that I am expected to complete/take up.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation of my 'day job' purely relies on what work is needing done, this is done using an Agile way of working which is being implemented through-out the bank. The apprenticeship studies/tasks/materials are all organised via a web portal which is provided by BPP, the tasks are then completed and managed on there.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Every week my manager holds a one to one with every member of the team. This is to not only track your progress but also to help you develop both in the apprenticeship and within your day role at RBS. The community that is RBS is also helpful as you will meet a variety of people which all have different knowledge bases.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have been given not only a lecturer for our apprenticeship work from BPP but we have also been provided with learning support via another member of BPP. If ever there are any questions we have multiple ways to get the information we require. All the information you require to complete the course can be found in their learning portal

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My day role is completely different from my apprenticeship role so far. There are some aspects between the two that are transferable however the way I look at it is that they are two completely different jobs. I have a day job and I also have my studies at BPP.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • RBS has it's own social network within RBS that is like facebook, this also has a multitude of different networks (LGBT, Womans network etc). RBS is very well connected and provides a easy way of networking with people in all different areas of the business. There is also the intranet which is good for finding events on and finding out who people are.

  • 9a. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have enjoyed my time so far within RBS and to me the enjoyment of my job is a necessity. I have met a variety of different people which has been good and the work culture is so much different to what I am used to. 110% a great place to work

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • Stick in, do your work, be social and try to network as much as possible. RBS is a really good place to work and what you put in you will get back. Be open with any questions you have, no question is a silly question. Challenge when you are unsure as things will get explained to you willingly.
