  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to work as part of various teams involved in the servicing and maintenance of offshore wind turbines. This could be a team carrying out an annual service, troubleshooting tasks, or escorting external companies when they carry out Stat inspections. I work a 2 week on 2 week off shift pattern with 12 hour shifts every day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I came in to this industry straight from school to pretty much everything I know I have picked up both through the college training we do, or have learnt it on the job. The more experienced technicians you work with are excellent at passing on knowledge and the company itself are great at moulding you in to the all round tech.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love it. I’ve got the best job in the world. Everyone you come across is brilliant and really keen to help you through your development. Doesn’t matter what role they have there is a clear open door policy throughout the company and I know if I had any issues I could go to anyone.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There have been complications throughout our programme caused by the company merging with another business. This did effect things to an extent however not too badly. Now that we have left college and are on the job it is extremely well organised. You are left to your own devices a lot and are expected to be independent and sort things out for yourself. So it can be as organised or as disorganised as you are!

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As I have previously mentioned with the open door policy, you get as much support as you want or need. You are able to crack on on your own if you are performing well or feel you are able to function effectively on your own. However if you do need a bit of support, there is a clear structure there to assist you and I know if I needed anything I could go to anyone.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We routinely have meetings and calls with out training provider and they do stress that anything we need we need only drop them an email. We get quality feedback on our tasks towards our qualification which allow it to take up as little time as possible so not to detriment our on the job learning.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It qualification we are working towards helps to solidify our understanding of processes we have come across on the job. Particularly through the job write up stage it will allow us to go back, look at what we did and actually think about it and break it down. This would clarify the processes and help further our overall knowledge of the job as a whole

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • It depends on where you are. At the site I am currently at we have 5 a side every week which is good to aid team building and to take your mind off work for a bit. Other sites regularly have nights out or day trips to achieve the same goal. A happy site is a good site

  • 9a. Would you recommend Siemens to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • You have the security of working for a big company and you get to work on multi million pound pieces of kit pretty much straight away. You are offered all the support you could possibly need as there is a genuine want for you to succeed from everyone you come across.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Siemens?
  • Stick with it! The application and recruitment process is long and arduous but it is 100% worth it. Best decision I ever made was applying for this job. Do a bit of research in to the company and what they get up to around the word and you will see that they are certainly worth working for. The opportunities are endless
