I work in an accounting assistant role. In the role I have to work with the Netherlands and keep our accounting systems in sync with theirs for example, I have to manage and chase up any outstanding invoices in our accounts and post any statements to add any payments to the system.
Within my role I have started learning accounting. I started at the basics learning about double entry and T-Accounts and within my role learnt about the key tasks that I have to complete. Currently I have started learning about more complex accounting theory like account reconciliations, profit and loss as well as balance sheets.
I have enjoyed my programme so far within work. I enjoy having the sense of responsibility and the knowledge that what I do is making an impact and helping a company. However I feel as though my apprenticeship is very vague currently. A lot of what I do as part of my qualification does not reflect the type of work I do within my role.
My programme has structure, however, I feel as though I'm given little support on actually meeting deadlines for example, I can be set a task complete with 4 modules in it and although I'm given a reasonable amount of time to complete it in, I rarely get given any advise on how to go about allocating the 4 modules by priority.
My manager is very supportive and will give me time at work to complete any tasks in my apprenticeship. He understands that first and foremost I am an apprentice and sets my workload accordingly. However, I feel as though the support my manager can give me is often limited as he understanding of the work I do in my apprenticeship is vague based on the communication given by the academy.
I get adequate support from my training provider. My assessor monitors my work as well as provides feedback. However, I feel like direct face to face communication is lacking. I have only been to the apprenticeship building once to learn and that was at the start of my apprenticeship (I have been in my role for 6 months). Observations occur regularly but I feel as though I don't get given the chance to express my feelings towards my apprenticeship/job efficiently.
I don't think it's help me much. I found it useful in the first few months as being in my first job it was helpful to learn about general office etiquette. However, specifically referring to the work I complete in my department and role there is little correlation to my apprenticeship and the modules that I am completing.
At work socially the only event I have been away of is the annual Christmas party. Other social events have only been within my team really such as the Christmas lunch. There are facilities for social events such as seating areas, café and restaurant. However, I don't feel there's any real push by the company to help network departments or help colleagues socialise with people that they may not have spoken to before.
Yes
It is a good company to be involved with. The environment is a friendly one and I don't feel uncomfortable around any of my colleagues. It well paid and adding the car scheme and perks on top of that the amount you make is suitable to the job role you are in.
If you are applying for an apprenticeship don't expect to necessarily do what the job role on the application says. The job description on the application is usually vague do to the diversity of the departments you can be put in to. However it is a good job to have and you will be made welcome.
