  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day role involves inventory work in the mornings, so creating product lists, actioning counts and zeros and making sure all our paperwork is up to date both legally and for health and safety. My day also includes packing out stock and breaking down deliveries for all sections of the shop making sure availability is high and the shop is full. I will also help out with home deliveries and sort out any customer queries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my leadership and management skills a lot since starting my apprenticeship. How I manage my team and the work I get out of them now has increased since starting my apprenticeship as I have learn't how to manage different people a lot better than before. This has increased the standards of the work in the store and the standards the team are presenting for the customers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program is very good in respect to it covers a lot of areas that I wouldn't usually learn about in store. This gives me a better understanding and helps me develop a lot more than I first thought and I have enjoyed learning about the areas that I wouldn't usually get involved in.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised with the individual modules well structured and easy to understand and follow. I found the support from my trainer very good and with visits every 4-6 weeks and also remote visits by phone call I am always able to get help when needed and stay on track with the programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I get from Iceland is very good, i get an extra 3.5 hours per week to complete my apprenticeship work in store and the support I receive from my store manager and area manager when needed has helped me complete the work required on time and to the best of my ability. This time also allows me to get cover when I have meetings with my trainer.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider provides me with lots of support during the qualification. My trainer makes regular visits to my store to track my progress and if that is not possible then they will do a remote visit by phone. I was also provided with a tablet that I can use during my qualification which has helped me complete my work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe my qualifications and the training I have been provided with has helped me perform better as a leader within the store. Being able to manage different people better than before has increased the performance of the team and the store for the better. It has also increased my knowledge of merchandising and how we compete with other retailers for sales.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We had a launch event with all the other level 3 retail apprenticeship where we went through what the course is and how it all works. We also set up a whatsapp group where all the apprentices could talk to each other about the course and help each other out if needed.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Iceland to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a good place to work with friendly staff and a range of job roles for staff to do. The development opportunities are high with training delivered in a number of different ways. Also there are opportunities to help implement improvements within the company such as new till systems and home delivery systems.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Iceland?
  • The best advice I could give to someone applying for a job at iceland are to be yourself throughout the process from filling in a application form to interview and starting work. Always be ambitions in what you want to achieve if you got a job and take on all the advice from others already working at the company.
