I work in the ASTeC Directorate as a Business Admin Apprentice and my job role consists of providing administrative support to the admin team at STFC. My main duties are to book and plan worldwide travel and accommodation for various managers and directors who work at STFC. I am also helping to plan and manage a variety of huge events and conferences which consist of an array of different tasks. I also book the refreshments for various meetings that are carried out around the workplace and I also complete a wide variety of ad-hoc and interesting tasks that take place around the office, which varies from time to time.
I have learned a wide amount of new skills at my workplace due to the variety of tasks I carry out, this allows me to improve on all aspect of my work/behaviour and become a better employee. As I use a large number of different software, I have become more knowledgable when learning about new systems and can comfortably work on these systems. My time working at STFC has also improved my workplace etiquette, communication and organisation.
I think the apprenticeships at STFC are very good and as a company, they take pride in their apprentices and always strive for them to improve, there is a lot of support from other colleagues and the company culture is excellent. I really enjoy my apprenticeship at STFC and would recommend their scheme.
The apprenticeship scheme at STFC is organised very well due to the apprenticeship manager they have employed, he oversees all of the apprentices at STFC and manages their journey. He is there for support when needed and will deal with any issues. Your apprenticeship is mapped out very clearly and the communication for new updates is very good.
The support I receive from my managers and colleagues is always very good, and they are willing to help me if I am stuck on a task or need guidance, the support given is always friendly and helpful and everyone seems to work as a team in my department. This is good for professional and personal development.
I have had a few issues regarding the organisation/communication from my training provider, I can always ask for support on the assignments that are given and this can help to improve the quality of my work. However, if we do not ask for support, we are normally just given the assignments with no prior training/knowledge.
The qualification is catered towards my apprenticeship and therefore the assignments we complete are all relevant questions towards my job role. Also the college days we complete help to learn knowledge regarding some IT systems, which is part of my qualification. Some of the assignments set also reflect on my organisation, which allows me to have a better knowledge of my organisations procedures and policies.
The amount of extra-curricular activities that are held at STFC are amazing, there are always a variety of activities to take part in, there are also a large number of clubs that take place in work, all of these are free to join and anyone can join in on these. Apprentices can also take part in networking events across the UK. There are also opportunities to work on projects abroad.
Yes
I think STFC take pride in their employees/apprentices and are willing to support their staff however they can. Their apprentice scheme is organised and there is always someone to report an issue too, if you have even have one. The future opportunities at STFC are endless and as long as you are hardworking, you can work anywhere in the company that is possible.
I would recommend that applicants are hard working and committed because STFC is a great company to work for, there will be some competition for job roles. I had no issues when applying to my apprenticeship and the interviews were structured well, some of the questions were tough, however, if the interviewer can see you have done research, they will be lenient.
