Currently in year 1 and am therefore in collage (OAS) full time. the work is split between a level 2 and level 3 qualification, one day a week is spent on level 3 the rest on level 2. level 3 is entirely theory whereas level 2 is mostly practical, you are given a practical tasks and then write a report on it.
I have significantly developed my theoretical knowledge of mechanical systems and electronics. I have also learnt machining on a lathe and mill as well as learning CAD design basics. I have also learnt electrical installation skills. finally, we have learnt how to use industrial robots and PLCs as used in industry, as well a learning about control instrumentation systems.
As I am only in my first year I find it somewhat difficult to give an accurate representation of the scheme. However i have so far enjoyed my training, i have learnt a range of skills particularly CAD design and machining, which i had not even touched on previously in school. I am however primarily looking forward to starting on site.
I think that the company has done a good job of ensuring that we can experience a wide range of job roles and has set out a clear pathway for us. however i think that the training could be better structured to make better use if the time available, i have been made aware of what work needs to be done, but due to the lack of defined structure i find that i don't know what i should be prioritizing.
My employer regularly visits the training center to address any issues that we may have, they are also happy to pride all the equipment we may need and additional equipment has been provided upon request. they have also explained that they will try to support our choices in the future such as pursuing a degree after the completion of the apprenticeship scheme.
they have provided all the necessary resources and information necessary to complete our work to a high standard. the tutors are always willing to help and provide assistance on both practical and written work when needed. the training provider has also us with a high quality set off tools for us to keep.
the qualification gives us all the necessary basic knowledge to start working and being a useful member of a team next year without needing constant supervision. this benefits both us and our employers significantly. however i do with that the qualifications could be tailored to a specific disciplined such as electronics rather than just general engineering.
There are a range of clubs and groups based on the harwell campus that can cater to the interests of a very wide range of people. this means that there will always be something to do. i have however not yet tried any of these as i am based on a different campus this year.
Yes
i have found my employer to be very supportive and helpful in all aspects of the scheme. unlike many other companies where you will be doing the same job for the whole of the apprenticeship scheme, i will get to experience a very wide range of rolls across all areas of the company, allowing me to better decide what i want to do in the future.
Make sure that you have a good initial application that stands out, remember that academic qualifications are not the main requirement, how you perform in the technical interview will probably be much more important. also remember that the scheme isn't just for school leavers, i joined after A levels but many people have joined even later in life looking for a change of career, or just after GCSEs.
