My role includes providing admin support for a team of ten mechanical and electrical engineers who perform quality checks on the works that are completed. I create and edit documents to confirm that works have been completed to a satisfactory level. I then check and scan these documents to a database.
I have learned a lot of new skills whilst performing this role. I have learned how to use more of the Microsoft package, namely Visio and Powerpoint and I have developed my existing skills on Excel. I have also become proficient at using Nitro Pro to edit and collate various documents.
The programme that I am on has been extremely enjoyable. We travel around London to the various Costain projects to meet, work on and discuss our apprenticeship. The other students are from different areas of the Costain business and this leads to some very interesting discussions about the procedure in all the offices and how they differ.
Our programme is very well structured. We were give dates to save for nearly all the dates we were due to meet. This allowed me to plan my work around these days to ensure it was all completed. The tutors provided us with folders and course details to keep our work with a very easy to use index.
My manager provides all the support I need. I informed him of all the dates for the course when I received them at the beginning which he approved. He has been available to discuss homework that I have needed his input to complete. Costain HR has been helpful in providing documents that I have been unable to find on the intranet.
The ladies have been the most supportive tutors I have ever had. They are encouraging and helpful. They are willing to answer any questions that we have and go over things we do not quite understand. In order to complete this course I have had to sit an English test and the ladies supported me with this by providing past papers and and regular assignments.
I feel that because of my training provider that I have become more confident, which in turn has increased my ability to deal with all levels of people, from the cleaner to the operations manager to the client. Having an official guideline on what is included in an administrators role has been most helpful. I also feel that my organisation skills have increased my productivity.
At Costain there are always social activities to attend where I have the opportunity to socialise with other staff members. I regularly join in to raise raise funds for charity by completing various activities, like walks, wearing pink/ red, and raffles. All of which I greatly enjoy! I have taken the opportunity to volunteer with other staff members together for Building Futures and 15 Billion, which also has the added bonus of helping our local communities and young people.
Yes
I have recommended friends and family to Costain as I feel they are brilliant company to work for. I have been here almost 2 years and I have learned so much! My colleagues are willing to assist me if they can. I have completed a huge amount of training online and off. If something can help to improve the production of my team, they are willing to show me or help me to train in order for us all to benefit.
I would advise anyone applying for a position at Costain to be themselves. Be open and honest about your skills and past work experiences, they will check! Come with an open mind and your can do attitude. I have found that volunteering for different departments has afforded me a wide range of work friends. Be willing to learn and get your hands dirty.
