  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day job at the moment consists of ordering materials and plant for site. Putting near misses on the system, doing the site diaries and sometimes going out to take levels on the works, surveying the areas and gathering other information for as built surveys. I also cost the tickets and do the GRN's on site.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned to use the integrated system Xpedeon and CMS to input data correctly for JN Bentley. I have also learned to use various pieces of equipment that are used in civil engineering. I have been able to build relationships well with suppliers and have learned the system how Bentleys like to operate.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Compered to my old job this one is much more suited to myself. I enjoy coming to work everyday and I never feel annoyed about having to come to work. The programme is enabling me to learn a lot about the company and the industry which is something I'm very happy for. I'm looking forward to growing more and getting involved in more to do with Bentleys.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • To some extents I feel it is organised well. But I have some things I think would be more beneficial to both parties. The college trip to Derby is a little far but I understand there is a large pool of people on the apprenticeship so this seems to be central (ish) for everyone. I feel that being an apprentice engineer it would be more beneficial to me that I am put with a full time engineer as a mentor and not a site agent. Whilst I appreciate that my mentor used to be in the same field as me, there isn't much in the way of engineering happening on site therefor I believe being paired with a full time engineer I would have been able to learn a lot more about the practical side of things by now.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel that I have been lucky to be put with a lot of helpful and welcoming people on my site. Any issues that I have ever had I feel I am able to talk to my mentor, line manager or anyone else on site to get help. Then if I have an issue that no one on site can help me with there is always someone else available elsewhere to help me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am able to get a fair bit of help from the provider but I believe that the tutor in my group is unable to adapt his teaching style to different people within the group. Whilst I get on with him and he seems to be able to help 'sometimes' there appears to be favourites in the group that appear to gain his help and understanding easier than others. A group of people with different skill sets should be able to be catered for in my opinion.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As far as the qualification goes so far I feel as though I have been able to learn a lot more from working on the job. But this is just my preferred learning style and always has been. So far in terms of practical work at college I have been unable to link it to the site that I am working on but this may be because it is near completion.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a lot of extra activities to get involved in here at JN Bentley. I am always getting emails come through regarding the classes that are carried out in the shifnal offices. There seems to be something for everyone here which is very good. Everyone is always invited to events outside of work as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because they are a very good company to work for. They appear to want to grow people and invest their time and efforts in to them. It appears that hard work gets rewarded well which for such a large company is a good thing. Nothing ever seems to be to much, they are very fair and everyone that works here is very friendly and approachable.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • Be yourself and if you get the chance to work for Bentleys then its obviously because they like you for who you are. Show that you are willing to learn and they will push you as far as you want to go. If you want to make a career with Bentleys it is definitely do able.
