Working alongside engineers, technicians and scientists to further the UK's scientific research programme and facilities. More specifically I work in one of the mechanical engineering departments on the building and maintenance of accelerator technologies. My day to day job role varies depending on the projects that are being done.
I have learnt many skills, both directly related to the job I am currently working in and some which are more personal skills. I know that all the skills I have learnt and will learn are transferable both across similar job roles and others within a wider engineering field. There are plenty of opportunities for training and further qualifications.
I enjoy both the work that I do and working alongside the rest of the team as we all get on well and work well together. The atmosphere on site is great, and it is a good environment to learn skills in. I also enjoy the placements across site in various departments as it allows a wider experience.
The organisation is good but got better as my apprenticeship progressed. The first year which is spent at a training centre makes it easier coming back onto site and integrating with the team. I have a clear line of contact with my managers, coordinator and training officer and I know that any problems will be resolved quickly and to my satisfaction
I receive as much support from my employer as I ask for and it is easy to ask for help when I need it. I am allowed a certain degree of independence on jobs which makes it more challenging and beneficial, however I know that I can ask anyone questions.
We have 4 weekly meetings with our training officers which helps us set clear targets for us to meet. Therefore we know what we should be doing and when to do it by making it easier to complete a well rounded portfolio. This makes it less stressful and more enjoyable.
Due to the nature of the work we do in accelerator engineering there are certain aspects which are not covered by college, and certain things which we get taught that are not applicable to our jobs. However the qualifications and job feed off each other as being hands on and working alongside systems means that when you come across them in an assignment, it makes it easier to talk about.
We are given access to professional working events through both the IET and the company itself - especially to young people in engineering forums. We have an apprentice committee that meets to sort out trips and activities. All the apprentices get on well with each other and so we often socialise outside of work.
Yes
Its a great working environment with good working benefits. The work is rewarding knowing that you are contributing to some of the biggest scientific research all over the world. The application process for the job was streamlined and the company kept me informed as to when I would start and what I needed to do.
Do not worry about the fact we are known as a Laboratory, and also don't worry about having to be amazing at science. It helps to know a little bit about the site and the type of work we do beforehand. Also make sure that you show your passion for engineering, as that is what the interview panel are looking for.
