My day varies between receiving subcontractors applications, processing them and then paying them to being out on site checking the work is completed that is meant to be done. there's lots in-between such as helping to complete applications for payments to the client, forecasts to work out how much we spend every month, setting up orders and work packages so that we have a written order with a subcontractor and also speaking with subcontractors for any issues they have
I've learnt many skills throughout this apprenticeship especially my communication skills as often it involves speaking to a vast amount of people from different companies and offices. I've also been on many courses which have taught me a variety of things such as health and safety, working at heights. a large pat of this job is also teamwork, I've developed my teamwork skills a lot due to working with a lot of my colleagues from different job roles
I do enjoy my programme especially when its busy and I have work to complete however there are sometimes when projects are just starting or finishing and there isn't much to do other than the small admin type jobs. this is only a small portion of the time however as usually its quite steady with work and you've always got something to do.
The organisation of our course was quite rocky to start with however once it got going we all had our personalised plans made up for what we want to have achieved by key milestone dates. the structure is okay but there are certain parts where it feels like there's been no organisation and we are left to work it out on our own which isn't great.
I receive a lot of support from my colleagues and my mentor who guides me through, especially with tasks I've never done before. However management higher up rarely support which needs improving. the training teams at head office are rarely in contact with any of the apprentices which shows there is a lack of care from them.
Our training provider is brilliant. We receive all the support we could need while working towards our qualification and our tutor knows what he's doing so he can always find a way to help us without actually giving us the answers to the work. any problems we have he's only a phone call/Email away.
our qualification is teaching us the basics and foundations of what we need o be able to do our job well. I think the course is well suited to our job role as without it we wouldn't have some of the basics we really need. I feel like my performance has benefitted because of the qualification
There's always extra activities on after work such as curry nights, book club meetings and other social engagement type events like a sports day in summer and a Christmas night out. we also have sports teams such as football on a Wednesday after work or netball on a Tuesday which are both located close to the office.
Yes
the work we do is varied and is interesting once you know what you're doing. all of my colleagues are always on hand to help and support you if you need it. this forms a big part of being happy at work which plays a big part for me. the extra activities are a bonus as well as a bi annual bonus for good performance. the pay is above average for apprentices and the career you could have because of the company is very desirable. the benefits such as car allowance and pension are also very good.
just be yourself at your interview, don't try and act smart because your given all the training you need to be able to complete the job. good knowledge of computers such as Microsoft word and excel as they play a big part in what we do. do your best and show them what you can do!
