  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • At times during my apprenticeship I have had little or nothing to do, but when I have things to do, I check the water level every morning , then on a Friday I measure the bridge to check for movement, when I am doing something the job is good , but when I have little or nothing to do I find it extremely boring.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to use some aspects of the GPS and Total station, I have developed knowledge on sections of civil engineering. I have met new people and made new friends, I have developed public speaking skills and very slowly but surely learning more tasks and new skills and adapting.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • when I have tasks and things to do I find the apprenticeship quite good as the tasks are quite interesting but when I am left nothing to do or if there is nothing to, I do not enjoy the programme as I am not one for just sitting around staring at a computer.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • For around 75% of my apprenticeship there was little tasks to do , for around 2 months I was travelling to Hull and sitting in a car , which was quite tedious , but recently the role has picked up and I have been giving more tasks and job roles, I believe I was employed at the wrong time , as at the start for the first month I was sat in an office in Leeds not really doing anything, the I moved onto to site , then I got moved to hull , but from around a month ago I have been given more tasks, therefore I feel I was employed at the wrong time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Dependant on whom I talking of , I receive support from my colleagues on site , two have helped me out a lot and despite not being my mentor have really helped me and taught me in last month as much as they can and they have time for which I appreciate.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My teacher Is a good guy, he has helped me a lot, as I fell very far behind due to wanting to leave , he told me what I needed to do and helped me get back on track to where I need to be , he is a very good teacher and has a lot for his students.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Despite only being at the start of the apprenticeship, most of what I have learnt at college has been the basics such as covering health and safety, so far I have been able to apply little or nothing from college to my job role, we are gradually working toward learning more about site based work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not that I am aware of, when I was in the office I believe they organised a 5 a side game once, I was invited but I had already made other arrangements therefore that is why my presence was not there , I believe there is other activities now in leeds.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Yes and no , I would recommend the job for people wanting to be a general operative as there is always work to do , but for me personally I have only really started getting into the job role in recent weeks and I learnt little at the start of my apprenticeship which I do not blame on the people that have helped me, as they showed me everything they could .

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • I would advise new starters to ensure that there is work for them to do when starting, I would advise if the opportunity arose to work away as there will always be work to do when working away as the company would not spend the money on working away if there is nothing to do, I would overall advise new starters to work hard and stick at it.
