  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I manage two different projects. I request updates from the various component teams, asking what they need to do to complete their tasks. I also provide the option for teams to come together to discuss what needs to be done, so they can help each other complete the overall target.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to communicate options clearly and succinctly to get the information required. I have also had to learn how to effectively use my time to not get overwhelmed by multiple projects. I have learnt how to persuade people to talk with other teams who tried not to.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It has provided a nice change of pace from previous employment, and has provided a way into the world of technology. It has nice standard hours, and I have flexibility to adjust them from week to week depending on needs, and for avoiding the traffic on the roads into work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The Barclays side has provided a good structure, and support teams to help with the day to day running of the programme. The Education side hasn't really kicked off yet, but I am sure they are able to provide a well structured programme from their side. This starts soon.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My Employer has both support from past apprentices and current to give a perspective from that level. There are also dedicated members of staff who run the programme, who provide information, and opportunities to fit into the Barclays ecosystem. Our Line manager also provides day to day support if required

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We are provided pre work before sessions, and we will also be receiving post work after our training periods. We are also provided a skills coach, which I am still awaiting confirmation of their name due to the previous skills coach being unavailable. This should be solved in the coming months

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It will be able to provide me an overview of the Project Management world. While there are many different ways and methodologies to run a project, it should be able to put things into perspective, even if they do use slightly different words for the same thing. But it will all work out.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are multiple groups available within the bank to take part in outside of work. We also have regular networking events within the larger team. The team also provides regular team meals and breakfasts, and occasional events to meet team members from further afield. There is a small 5 a side football team present as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The bank does look after its employees, even if they are worked hard. It does offer large amounts of opportunities to move around, which is a good thing for being so big. There are flexible working hours within reason, allowing you to choose an early start, so you can finish early.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • To be honest. It does help if you have an interest in the area you have gone for. So if it is a tech role, having an interest in tech is useful. If it is a business role, having an interest in the business side is useful. Also don't try to pen yourself in too much. There might not be a slot for you.
