  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a business admin apprentice my role is to support the project that I am involved as well as other projects. This can be from doing utility drawings, managing spreadsheets, inputting data, innovating ways we do manage the project to better the efficiency of it. In the project I help the work load of the site managers by reducing the task that they have to complete.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I have learnt lots of skills on excel such as conditional formatting and the object feature which can be use to visualise the programme a lot easier as well as use this data to give to the client. I have also improved my knowledge on the highways system of how we apply for notices, how long we have to give for them and how to respond to any Permit Modification Requests (PMR). Also how to go without receiving any Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN's) when doing the project which are fines for not following the highways 'rules' and for any late information given to them. This has been taught to be through on the job training when working within the project.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my work as it can be challenging at times when you are under pressure as a team to make deadlines for the client however its a great environment to work around as the employees that I do work with, I have a great relationship with and have been friendly and welcoming to the project.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very organised. We have now moved into a new office area in the Carr Hall Office in order to improve our efficiency as we needed more whiteboards and wall space to place information on the walls about permit start and end dates along with how this will match up with the programme. Also to see what permits we need to chase so all the resources are there for us to be organised and communicate with one an other so the project runs a lot smoother.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Great Support. The employees that I am around at JN Bentley don't treat me as an apprentice as they listen to what improvements I may have to offer and do actually listen. They will also explain something to me if I don't understand and will take time to train me in areas which I have never done before. An example will be [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who has been taking me on site to do surveys so I get a greater understanding of how the gas industry works and [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] the site manager will always be there for support or any questions that I have he will be able to answer.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider is great and comes in once a month to see where I am up to and go through areas which I could be struggling in. Just because I only see them once a month does not mean that it from them as I can ring them whenever if I am stuck and they will spend some time over the phone or by email helping me out.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training provider gives me a better understand of the laws within my role and a better understanding of the broader term of business admin rather than business admin within the construction industry. They have also helped me perform in my role offering me courses such as ICT exams due to myself not doing ICT at GCSE therefore getting a level 1/2 in this to prove that I can do this in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. I participate in a 5 a side football every Wednesday night with other work colleagues but this is just one of the few activities that they offer at Bentleys. There is netball games held on Tuesday nights and Yoga/Meditation held on a Tuesday or a Thursday dinner in the Chapel.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a company which do really value there employees so you feel welcomed when you do join the company. They also have an extremely friendly environment which was a surprise when I first joined due to this being the first time in a professional workplace as everyone is approachable and friendly.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • To just apply and make sure you stand out when applying. When meeting JN Bentley staff on your interview just be polite and arrive on time. Learn about the values of JN Bentley and bring this up in conversation and some background knowledge of the construction industry would help. Just make sure you apply as if you are accepted you will not regret it.
