Deal with regulatory interactions for the Operational Risk team, including managing ongoing projects and sub tasks involved, provide Policy support for colleagues across the organisation and oversee the annual refresh of Group Policies and Standards. Compile reports on success/shortfalls ahead of board committee meetings. Actively participate in both People Engagement and Diversity and Inclusion working groups.
I have learned a number of new skills and I have become and accredited member of the Institute of Risk Management. I am now working towards the completion of the International Certificate in Financial Services Risk Management. In the role I have learnt a great deal about the industry and Risk environment and how this is managed.
My programme is very enjoyable and there is a great culture within the team, the culture encourages recognition and senior leadership take time to recognise this make you feel good about it. The culture of the company is fantastic especially employing over 70k people across multiple countries and locations and yet it is very welcoming.
The structure of the programme is good however there is an opportunity to add further qualifications including following the International Certificate in Financial Services Risk Management with the diploma as there is a gap in studying. The support is fantastic with weekly calls with my line manager, bi-weekly calls with the Early Careers team and monthly calls with the learning providers.
I receive a lot of support from my line manager however the HR team/HR Business Partner/Early Careers team can sometimes leave something to be desired. It can be frustrating sometimes as teams can be a little disjointed and it seems that nobody takes accountability for decisions, persistence is key and having a supportive line manager makes a difference.
Our training provider supports with monthly calls and offers support when needed. They are very willing to support especially as the course is mostly self taught. They are able to offer guidance with any issues and are extremely flexible. I thoroughly enjoying catching up with them and always feel supported.
I feel that the qualification helps me to gain a very detailed understanding of the Risk Management culture of organisations and this is supported by my everyday role, I feel that this helps me to take a more active part in team work/discussions. However there isn't much opportunity to put theory in to practice.
There are plenty of extra-curricular activities to get involved with especially fundraising and team social events. Lots of the events are based in our office however sometimes they are in the local area. Everyone is happy to support any events which I want to run and they are always open to ideas.
Yes
Barclays is like a family, I've never felt so welcome which is strange in such a large organisation, the culture is very pleasant and the environment is one in which it is easy to feel comfortable, even on yearly rotations it is easy to become a part of the team and not feel like a spare part.
I would say, ask for support, get involved in as many events as you can and get some work experience if possible. There are lots of routes in to Barclays so if you don't get the outcome you're looking for (at an interview or in your exams) there may be another way in! When you're being interviewed throw yourself in to it and enjoy it, they aren't there to catch you out!
