  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an Audit assistant requires me to provide assistance to the audit team/incharge. I generally have responsibility over the simpler sections of areas in Audit such as Cash and Bank which requires me to do a lot of sample ticking exercises. My tasks are updated by the incharge who explains them to me in order to give me an understanding.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've picked up skills when using Excel such as shortcuts and formulas as well as making a good worksheet. I've developed my communication skills as my job requires a lot of client interaction so it's essential my queries are understandable and straight forward in order for the client to assist me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is enjoyable as I feel as though I've matured as a person due to being in a corporate environment. Work can be tedious at times and the days can stretch but that's part and parcel of being a first year trying to gain knowledge and experience.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme intends to give the apprentices the opportunity to rotate around different service lines in order to gain a feel of everything. The idea is fantastic but in reality the likelihood is apprentices will stay in Audit due to a high business demand and the department is under resourced.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • 20% of an Apprentices time a year is spent doing training and off the job learning which is great and helps build knowledge in a less pressured environment. You're assigned a performance manager and a buddy which and support you whenever you're in need of someone to talk to.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Frequently I'll contact my training provider for assistance when I'm stuck and the tutors are readily accessible and happy to help which is great. Before an exam I'll either meet or call my tutor and just speak about how I'm feeling and their advice and opinion on where I'm at.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The content covered by the training provider provides reason as to why I'm completing tasks in my role. This helps me complete the tasks on the job with better quality as I understand why I'm doing it. The tutor also provides examples of real life activities which helps bridge content with application.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • KPMG has many clubs for you to get involved in and there's always invites being sent to you for networking events as KPMG emphasise on networking. Recently there was a regional football tournament held in Leeds which consisted of teams made from different offices. This was great to network and meet different people.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities given to an 18 year old at this firm are priceless and cant be obtained elsewhere. Client exposure and quality training is sure to make you better and improved in your role as well as mature you as a person. Also theirs a willingness from senior employees to advise and help younger employees which is great.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • Don't be afraid of the expectations and the working life hours, rather embrace it and expect it. Working for such a big firm won't be an easy ride, but the end destination will be worth it. Also, do take part in networking events as you make connections which are essential in growing as an employee and gaining vital insights and advice from experienced seniors.
