  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Travel to work, arrive on client site and review the accounts of the client. You’re checking the numbers they have at year end is correct. So you carry out testing to check that they are not mis stating anything. You query with the client to understand certain areas of their business as you’re not an expert in their business.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Talking to clients are a massive part so communication has been key. Confidence is key. Also not afraid to ask questions and no question is a stupid question! Also organisation has been hard with exams as well as work. You get given responsibility straight away so it’s you quickly learn to grow up!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It’s tiring most of the time. Challenging when it’s busy season but it’s rewarding as you’re earning a living. People are so lovely so it makes the experience a lot nicer; especially when you’re stressed. Everyone is in the same boat so I love just hanging out with fellow apprentices

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The people know what they’re doing so the program is very well structured! But sometimes deadlines are tight but I mean, it’s the big 4 so you have to get that quick turn around! It’s organised but nothing is that in advance; everything still gets sorted so it’s still runs smoothly

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot of support! They know things are hard, especially when you come straight out of school and into the working world, add on exams!! You get support from the department, and on top of that the Apprenticeship management. You get meetings every now and then but you can always give them an email or book a meeting in if you’re struggling & want some help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • You get calls from them every now and then, and you get the portal online where you can submit the questions and they get back to you quite quickly! There are steps that help you to work towards the exam. Any time you feel like you’re struggling you can directly contact the tutor.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • You understand the business a lot more through the exams and the skills you learn! You get this quicker and understands what people are talking about. You’re also more efficient with your work so that’s quite good since organisation and efficiency is key when it’s busy season

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Of course there are activities and events! There is a running club and other sporting events in the firm. Also loads of events happen throughout the year and everyone welcomes you, either as volunteers or just getting involved. They’re super fun and you meet people who you would never meet as they’re so busy!

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The firm is super friendly and such a warm welcoming vibe! You easily settle in and I think it’s such a good stepping stone if you’re coming straight out of school. You don’t feel complete alien in the firm as there are so many others that are your age

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • Be confident and know why it’s KPMG that you want. Know the program you’re going into as it’s longer than others. You don’t have to be a super clever person to apply so don’t think the big 4 isn’t for you if you’re not too academic.
