I am currently training an MINI Plant Oxford to become a maintenance technician within BMW. The role covers constnat maintenance in the 3 main areas of the Plant, Body in White, Paint Shop and Assembly. We rotate wround these areas to get a feel for the maintenance jobs involed across the compnay as they can very greatly. We work alongside maintenance associates on the line and have to work in the same condistions as they do, shadowing them and asking qauetions to ensure we learn as much as we can. We also spend on day a week at college studying for engineering specific qualifications.
I can safely say my knowledge of engineering (electrical and mechanical) had imporved greeatly, not just in a theoretical manner but also in a hand-on way which is exactly what the apprenticeship allows me to do. I can study the theory at college and then apply when working with the maintenance associates.
One of the best parts about the programme is being able to meet young people who are interested and passionate about the same area as I am, engineering. Its also an extremely efficient way to introduce young people to world-wide businesses and get them trained to the right standard.
I fell as though my training managers try their best to take my thoughts and issues into account and I am well supported within the company.
The programme has been re-structured for my year. I feel the new programme is much better than the previous however initally there were some hiccups but they were quickly sorted ouit.
The support recieve from BMET college was enough, however being on day release meant quesries were sometimes difficult to get an answer to quickly.

I would recommend doing an appretniceship to anyone who wanted to bypass the debt of university and get hands on experience within their chosen field.
Be open minded about the kind of work you will be taking on, ensure your are an organised individual whose open to new callenges.
