  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Business Analyst and have been in the same team since I started. My day to day role consists of business analysis and design, requirements gathering, building stakeholder relationships in order to gain sign off of the business requirements gathered. These requirements are then passed onto the development team to build.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have built on and developed new skills. I have enhanced my communication skills via building relations with stakeholders by hosting webex conference calls and this has built my confidence in talking to large audiences that sometimes have senior members of the company. I have also developed soft skills and IT skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme as i feel it is a fantastic opportunity to build a career in technology. The company’s ethos is strong and the culture is great. The people are also great and supportive and seem to genuinely care about personal development. Its great to study at uni and learn on the job

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is organised well but there is definitely room for improvement. Being a cohort in Glasgow and having our career coaches in Radbroke it would be more beneficial to have a Glasgow based career coach. The structure is good in terms of uni as its 4 years but there could be more structure to the role in work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am fortunate and receive a great deal of support from my employer. At first it was daunting being an apprentice in such an experienced team but i feel very supported and welcome in my team. I can approach any of them with questions. My line manager fully supports me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive support but there is room for Improvement. We are not given study leave during exam time which is frustrating as i feel this would benefit is greatly and actually enhance our grades. We are under pressure to obtain a certain grade and some of us have managers who allow us to study during work at exam time but there are no transparent guidelines For managers. Study leave would remedy this.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am a business analyst and my degree is software development therefore i cant say my qualification fully enables me to perform better. Theres the odd module thats relevant to my role but not enough. I like the balance of doing a degree thats different to my role but many lecturers assume we are all developers when we are not.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are networking events that have been great opportunities to meet senior staff members in the company and even board members. The social calendar is sufficient and theres lots of opportunities to socialise with the wider teams. There arent any sports teams but there is a yoga class that is weekly

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Barclays are easily the best company i have worked for. The culture is great, the values are fair and transparent. Personal development is welcomed and everyone ive met is welcoming and supportive. All senior members of the company i have interacted with are approachable which is rare. I feel a sense of belonging and not just a number.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • As with any job application, preparation is key and crucial to successfully securing a new role. Do your research of the company/business area and be curious. Practise interviewing with friends or family. Most importantly be yourself and have questions prepared. Practice makes perfect and you will feel good knowing you have prepared.
