  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently I am in a 3 month placement within an electrical packaging department, where I use 3D modelling software known as Creo in order to produce models and assess designs. I also have to analyse old drawings and data packs for parts which require obsolescence management. In this current moment I am designing a 3D printable scale model for one of our live systems. Previously I have completed a 6 month placement in manufacturing and a 3 month placement within the cabling design department.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have had previous experience with other CAD software such as Solidworks and Autodesk, however Creo offers an alternative experience. I now have an understanding of how to operate the software effectively. During my time in manufacturing I have learnt countless practical skills such as set up and use of specialist equipment. Additionally, when I was in the electrical department I learnt how to operate MBDA's data management network Matrix, and how to calculate cabling data including bundle diameter and shrink ratios.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship programme since it enables me to experience a vast range of departments with varying skill sets and practises. Not only does this provide me with an opportunity to network across the entire company, but also helps gain an understanding and appreciation for how MBDA operates from top to bottom.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship was clearly outlined to me prior to starting, including details such as training which I would be receiving and additional courses which I could sign up for. We are given an updated placement plan before the end of each placement stating who and where will we be working with in the future. This allows me to pre-plan meeting new managers/personnel, as well as any training and security clearances which are required.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provides an enormous amount of support through both the intranet and speaking directly to HR rep's or the early careers manager. They are willing to help with any issues either anonymously or in person. Regular workshops are also run in order to be exposed to some of benefits which MBDA provide in terms of rewards and development. Communications are also sent out via email stating any new initiatives or developments which have taken place.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our training provider holds a one to one progress review meeting once every 3 months. In this meeting the will go through any queries or concerns with have, as well as logging our progress through our training. They are also available to contact via email or phone if required. How at times there can be a lengthy wait for replies if contacting via email.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualifications which I am currently studying help to provide me with a theoretical understanding of engineering operations e.g. calculations and conversions. Furthermore, the NVQ course also provides a more practical learning experience, which was especially useful when I was working with machinery and operating tools in a manufacturing environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The majority of apprentice based events at MBDA feature networking opportunities with designated segments to cater for this. MBDA also sent me to a young person conference at the royal aeronautical society. At this event I had the chance to listen to some seminars on current developments around the aerospace industry, as well as meeting like minded apprentices.

  • 9a. Would you recommend MBDA to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They also care about your personal development and happiness rather than using you for their gain. There is numerous extra outside activities from the normal working environment, for example career workshops and networking events. There is also regular windows where you can make your voice heard to people higher up within the business.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to MBDA?
  • Be yourself, while also being willing to learn and adapt. This will help you integrate easily into the MBDA ecosystem and follow their values. This will also help you develop yourself through taking extra courses and training that MBDA makes readily available to all of their employees through out the business.
