  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am f point of contact for customers entering our branch. I work in the banking hall demonstrating how to use the machines and using the I-Pad to help complete customer requests. I also work on the till handling large amounts of money. I have many conversations with our customers and explaining all the products and benefits they have available as a Barclays Customer

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I came into Barclays knowing nothing in regards to banking. Now I am able to work independently in regards to tills, self service, ipads and customer interactions. My knowledge on Barclays products ie Insurances, mortgages and lending has grown massively and I am still consistently developing my understanding and knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Thoroughly, I feel grateful for the opportunity of being able to develop vital skills and knowledge whilst getting paid. I really enjoy learning about Retail Banking and how vital it is within the financial community. This programme allows me to develop key and fundamental knowledge needed to exceed. This also made me aware of the huge opportunities available further along.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not very well. I went a significant without any support from the apprenticeship programme. I received support internally from barclays however I don't feel like I have spoken to many people externally which has resulted in me being isolated in completing my coursework and not knowing who to contact if any support is needed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Every 6 weeks I have a One to One in which we speak in regards to my apprenticeship. Throughout this One to One we speak about potential actions which can be put into place to help me develop and support me in regards to my apprenticeship. Furthermore making sure I am on tract to complete it successfully.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have been engaged within the apprenticeship for 10 months and last week I had my first conference call with Barclays Apprenticeship Support. So up until this point I had no designated person within Barclays to go to apart from the people who were based in my branch

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The Retail Banking Conduct of Business Textbook outlines relevant learning material in which I apply to my role. The Textbook speaks about financial products and services which are applicable to Barclays and ones in which we offer. Furthermore this has thoroughly expanded my retail banking knowledge and understanding which helps me preform my role to a much higher standard.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are the opportunities to engage within a Money Skills and Life Skills events. There are also Digital Demo workshops. Money Skills and Life Skills Eveents are where the bank arrange these once per year where we either go out to schools or get the schools to come to our conference centre and teach them all about how to handle money, count money and make them realise the value of money and how to prioritise money when spending. I am yet to do any of these events but when they come up I shall volunteer myself to help.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because the provide great support for people who are wanting to gather a good understanding in regards to retail banking. They have amazing systems and processes available to really help you exceed as an individual. The support is constant and I believe I always have someone to speak to if any additional support is need.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • The advise I would give to someone is that they need to make sure Retail Banking is what they are wanting to go into. This is because there are a lot of processes and regulations you need to learn therefore you need to have a positive mentality which will help you understanding and process all this information much quicker.
